AARP Georgia volunteers reacquainted themselves with arts and crafts, all for the sake of spreading love and cheer to the metro-area’s older adults this Valentine’s Day.
With a goal of creating 200-300 cards, each volunteer used construction paper, foam hearts, glitter pens and more to imprint their own artistic flair into each card, also writing heartwarming messages within.
AARP Georgia volunteer Beverly Stennett-Darby said it is important to reach out to others on Valentine’s Day.
“They may not otherwise have someone to say Happy Valentine’s Day or smile to say ‘We love you. Here’s a beautiful flower for you and a hug,’” she said.
Through this process, she is reminded of visiting her father in a nursing home, and how she would visit other residents on his floor who weren’t able to spend time with families on Valentine’s Day.
“This project really touched my heart,” Beverly said.
Volunteer Gary Cecil said he really enjoyed making cards for others as well. To him, a project rooted in compassion like this supports those age 50 and older in a manner they might not receive if AARP did not exist.
Each card was attached to a rose that AARP Georgia volunteers gave to individuals across three care facilities. Volunteers delivered 100 roses to the Olivia Haydel Senior Center on Thursday, February 12, 2026. On Friday, February 13, 2026, volunteers delivered 200 roses to Lou Walker Senior Center and 120 roses to Bonterra Transitional Care and Rehabilitation.
