Advocating for Caregivers: AARP Georgia Meets with Congressman Rick Allen
Recently, AARP Georgia Volunteers and staff met with Georgia Congressman Rick Allen (R-12) to discuss the Credit for Caring Act, which provides financial relief to eligible working family caregivers. The bi-partisan bill offers up to a $5,000 nonrefundable federal tax credit to help offset caregiving expenses and the financial sacrifices that caregivers make to support their loved ones.
Volunteers Romell Cooks, Margaret Taylor, Associate State Director Wallace White, and Advocacy Manager Alice Bennett met with Allen to discuss the benefits of the act and to begin building a relationship with the congressman. Cooks and Taylor also shared their personal caregiver stories.
Congressman Allen who represents the east and southeast parts of Georgia, including Augusta, Dublin, and Statesboro, said the bill will be assigned to the U.S House Committee on Ways and Means. He also pledged his support for the bill. “Great job, team Augusta, for your leadership in getting the “YES” from Congressman Allen,” Bennett said.
