Volunteers from across South Florida came together on March 4 at The Pride Center at Equality Park in Fort Lauderdale for a strategic meeting focused on advancing advocacy priorities and strengthening AARP’s impact across Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
The gathering brought together dedicated volunteers, local elected officials, and AARP leadership for meaningful conversations about the issues affecting residents age 45+ and the role communities play in supporting people as they age.
The program included remarks from Jeff Johnson, who welcomed volunteers and highlighted the importance of their work in elevating community voices and driving change at the local and state levels.
Participants also heard from local leaders Aisha Gordon and Paul Rolli, who joined AARP Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer and Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond for a leadership dialogue. The discussion explored how local governments are adapting to better serve older residents, the challenges communities are facing, and the important role older adults play in strengthening civic life.
The meeting also included an interactive session where volunteers shared insights from their work in the community. Conversations focused on key AARP priorities such as livable communities, legislative advocacy, fraud prevention, Social Security, outreach, volunteer recruitment, and trends in community education needs.
Volunteers provided valuable on-the-ground feedback, highlighting strong alignment between national priorities and the needs they see locally—particularly around affordability, fraud prevention, and the importance of age-friendly community planning.
The meeting reinforced the critical role volunteers play in shaping AARP’s strategy and advancing advocacy at the local level. It also strengthened partnerships with municipal leaders and underscored the continued commitment of South Florida volunteers to building stronger, more livable communities for people of all ages.
