Delaware’s paid family and medical leave program is now in effect, providing crucial support for the more than 129,000 caregiversacross the state. The new law ensures caregivers can take time to support loved ones through serious health challenges without risking their income or job security.

“Paid leave is a lifeline for caregivers,” said Liz Richards of the Delaware Cares Coalition. “It ensures people can be there for family without jeopardizing their financial stability. We encourage all Delawareans to visit de.gov/paidleave to learn more.”

The Healthy Delaware Families Act of 2022 became law after strong bipartisan and community support.

Key Benefits for Caregivers:

  • Financial relief for caregivers: AARP Delaware reports that unpaid caregiving hours rose from 108 million to 116 million between 2017 and 2021. The new law reduces the financial strain associated with that care.
  • Stronger job protection: Caregivers can now focus on family during medical crises without fear of losing their jobs.
  • Better workplace stability: Research from the American Sustainable Business Council shows that employers offering paid leave see stronger retention, meaning caregivers are more likely to return and stay employed after taking leave.
  • Support for new parents who are also caregivers: With over 10,000 births in Delaware each year, paid leave helps parents balance work and caregiving during a critical time.
