AARP Colorado is formally intervening in energy giant Xcel’s upcoming electric rate increase case before the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC).

AARP Colorado submitted formal testimony with the PUC on April 28, pushing back against the utility’s nearly 10% rate hike proposal and taking issue with Xcel’s methodology for raising electric rates.

AARP is critical of the utility’s attempt to collect more revenue to fund certain investments in communications equipment and for costs related to the Comanche 2 power plant. AARP is opposing Xcel’s proposal to create new “trackers” to increase rates.

“Coloradans have endured years of rising electricity bills, and this proposal would push many households further into energy insecurity,” Sara Schueneman, AARP Colorado state director, said. “Regulators should rely on real data, not forecasts, reject unjustified charges, and ensure customers aren’t paying profits on legal fees, struggling power plants, or unproven investments.”

AARP Colorado is urging the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to significantly scale back Xcel Energy’s proposed electric rate increase, warning that customers, especially older adults on fixed incomes, are already struggling with rising energy costs.

AARP Colorado calls on regulators to put a stop to the utility’s efforts to profit from routine operating expenses and to schedule a new “Phase 2” case to ensure that customers, of all sizes and including data centers, are paying their fair share.
