If I don't have 40 Social Security credits at age 70, can I wait until I do to file for benefits?

En español | Yes, you can wait to file for Social Security until you are 71, or 75, or however long it takes to become eligible to receive benefits.

However, you cannot earn the delayed retirement credits that increase your benefit until you have earned your 40th Social Security credit, even if you are past full retirement age when that happens.
