Trends in Creating Homes and Communities for Aging Well

The AARP Home and Community Preferences Survey: A National Survey of Adults Age 18-Plus

A group of senior friends are talking and laughing outdoors.

The AARP Home and Community Preferences survey examines the needs and desires of adults regarding aging in their homes and communities. It serves as a vital resource for understanding the evolving needs of older adults, guiding improvements in housing options, community design, and support systems.

About the AARP Home and Community Preferences Series

Communities play a crucial role in shaping residents' quality of life and are essential for fostering happier, healthier lives. They are places where residents form relationships with friends, neighbors, community organizations, schools, businesses, and other entities. Given the significant impact communities have on residents' long-term well-being, especially for older adults with unique needs, it is important to understand what community residents need and desire. This understanding enables communities to provide appropriate support, allowing everyone to thrive and age with dignity and purpose.

The survey has been conducted every three years since 2018, with data available for the years 2018, 2021, and 2024. It will be conducted again in 2027. The survey is administered online in both English and Spanish. The data are weighted based on demographics for U.S. adults aged 18 and older, using the Current Population Survey and the National Center for Health Statistics Survey, as well as AARP membership data from the AARP membership database.
