Does Medicare Cover Acupuncture?

En español | Original Medicare does not cover acupuncture or other forms of alternative medicine, such as naturopathy, homeopathy or — except for medically necessary spinal manipulation — chiropractic care. You will have to pay 100 percent of the cost of such treatments.

Medicare Advantage private insurance plans may include coverage for acupuncture, which involves inserting small needles through the skin in specific places to treat diseases or alleviate pain. The practice originated in China.

Check with your Medicare Advantage plan provider about specific treatments. You likely will need to use an acupuncturist who is in your plan’s network to take full advantage of this benefit.
