Finding an optimal sleep set up can take some time and adjustment. To assist in the journey to finding the best sleep positioning for you, there’s a common bed accessory many will use: An adjustable base. While there are many adjustable bases on the market, Nectar — a company known for its mattresses — offers its own solution: the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base.

An adjustable base is a kind of electronic bed frame that allows you to raise or lower a mattress, often through the use of a programmed remote control. These bases can make it easier to sit up in bed for activities like reading and may offer symptom relief for health conditions like sleep apnea or acid reflux. For older adults with mobility limitations, an adjustable bed may also make it easier to get in and out of bed, since you can raise the head of the bed and get into a seated position more easily.

When our AARP Smart Picks team evaluated eight adjustable bases with a group of testers ages 45 and older, the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base stood out as one of the most feature-rich models, earning a place in our best adjustable beds roundup. For this model, testers especially appreciated features like full-body massage, underbed lighting and a companion app that lets you adjust the base via Bluetooth.

Read on for our review of the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base, including pros and cons as well as details on who might benefit from it.

What we like about the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base

Our lab team tested the queen and split-king sizes of the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base, but it does come in sizes beyond what we tested, including twin XL, full and king sizes. A split-king adjustable base pairs two twin XL bases to form a king bed with independently adjustable sides. The smooth mechanics and easy-to-use controls were standout features in our testing for both sizes. But the split king’s independent adjustment capability may be especially important for couples who want to avoid sleep disruption when one partner adjusts their side of the bed.

In general, we also liked this model’s extra features, such as its wireless remote and five preset positions — like TV mode, which involves elevating the head fully upright, like when you’re sitting on a couch, and zero gravity mode, where the head and feet are elevated. The base also has two USB ports on each side that you can use to charge your devices. This model also has a zero-clearance design, meaning it can be used on an existing platform bed frame or placed directly on the floor.

Since the queen model of this adjustable base weighs 149 pounds and the split king weighs 210 pounds without a mattress, we also appreciate that Nectar offers options for white-glove delivery. With this service, the company delivers and sets up your sleep product — in this case the new base — and removes your old one (if you have one). The company offers white-glove delivery starting at $199 for two items, such as a base and mattress, with additional items costing $49 each.

The downside? Not every purchase qualifies for white-glove delivery, and this service isn’t available in all locations. When we reached out to Nectar customer service for clarity on where this service is offered, a representative said, “It is always changing. It depends on the items and the location so we are unable to know for certain until you check out on the website.” When we then tried to arrange white-glove delivery for the split king Nectar Premium Adjustable Bed Frame in a Las Vegas ZIP code, the representative confirmed only the full and queen sizes qualified. When we tried using a Chicago ZIP code, Nectar did not give an option for white-glove delivery.

That delivery issue aside, there are other shopping benefits to note. For example, Nectar offers a 60-night trial period that lets you return an adjustable base without fees if it doesn't meet your expectations. According to our research, that’s longer than most trial periods for adjustable bases. Nectar also offers a two-year warranty that covers defects in materials and workmanship.

Key takeaways from our testing

Easy transitions with little noise. We tested the split king and queen versions of the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base, and both had the smoothest movements and the lowest amount of noise of all the bases we’ve tested. When we measured how loud both versions were while adjusting, the loudest reading we recorded was 32 decibels — a level just above a whisper. The average reading of all bases we tested was 38.5 decibels. During his evaluation, Bryan, a 62-year-old tester, noted that the bed positioned on this base seemed to glide into position. "Each adjustment slows to a subtle stop, so you're not getting tossed around while moving the bed," he said. On the split-king model, Bryan said the movements were still smooth and didn’t disturb him, even when elevating the split heads independently.

Ample presets and other unique features. This base offers more settings than most models we’ve tested: five preset positions and two to save your favorite custom positions. It also offers unique features such as underbed lighting to help reduce fall risk, a wireless remote control and an app that allows you to make adjustments via Bluetooth. The intuitive remote control made it easy for our tester to learn and use each feature. "I had no issues differentiating between each button's functions," Bryan said. "It even places the massage feature at the bottom of the remote control, away from the adjustment buttons, so you won’t accidentally turn it on and off." In general, adjustable bases tend to offer vibrational massage, and this base was no exception. Though Bryan said he would have preferred a firmer massage, in our testing, he also said he liked the massage feature and found it relaxing, describing it as more of a “soft rumble” rather than a deep-tissue massage.

Expensive, with potentially limited delivery options. The average retail price of all queen bases in our best adjustable bases review is $1,495. So, at $2,929 for a split king and $1,631 for a queen, this base is comparatively pricey — although it’s often on sale for $1,538 and $789, respectively. The white-glove delivery service is also limited, which is worth noting since both sizes of this adjustable base are large and heavy. If white-glove delivery isn’t available in your area and you want to buy this base, consider hiring a local mover to help with set-up after delivery.

How much does the Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame cost?

The Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame retails from $1,464 to $2,929, depending on the size. For example, the split-king size featured in this review is $2,929, and the queen size retails for $1,631.

But you may not have to pay the retail price. To save money, you can keep an eye out for promotions, as the company’s frequent sales may offer discounts of up to 50 percent.

Note: Prices for adjustable bases do not include a mattress, and the split-king base, in particular, requires two twin XL mattresses. So, when it comes to promotions, you also can look out for bundled deals from the company for its beds and adjustable bases, which can cut the price of both by up to 66 percent. Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame settings and features

The Nectar Premier Adjustable Base has multiple settings and features that go beyond those of most adjustable bed frames we’ve tested. In this section, learn more about these extra, and see the tips on best practices that we learned during our testing.

Preset positions

  • Zero-gravity mode. One preset button activates zero-gravity mode, which slightly elevates the head and foot of the bed for a "weightless" effect. Tester Bryan especially liked this setting. “I feel the pressure ease on my back in this position,” he said. “It felt like I was floating. Sometimes zero-gravity modes will keep your head lower than your feet, which makes me feel upside down. But that wasn’t the case with this base.”
  • TV mode. This preset button raises the head of the bed significantly, positioning you to watch TV in bed. Bryan noted that TV mode propped him up a bit too much. “TV modes sometimes have you lounging back, but on this base it feels more like sitting in a chair,” he said. “I’d prefer to lean back more when watching TV in bed.”
  • Reading mode. This preset raises the head of the bed to a reclined position for reading. A plus: If you read a traditional print book, this activity can be a nice alternative to nightly screen time.
  • Anti-snore mode. This mode lifts the head of the bed slightly to help keep your airway open for better breathing.
  • One-touch flat. This button returns the base to a fully flat position in just one step.

Additional features

  • Programmable buttons. The inclusion of one or two memory presets on a base's remote is standard, based on our research. This remote has two programmable memory buttons labeled M1 and M2 that let you save these two additional positions — so you can access them whenever you’d like. You can also use these two modes to further adjust the standard presets noted above.
  • Head and foot elevation. These kinds of controls are standard among the bases we’ve tested. Unlike some other bed frames, the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base lets you control both the head and foot simultaneously to speed adjustments.
  • Child lock. If you have small children around, this base’s child lock feature prevents accidental adjustments and can offer added peace of mind.
  • Massage. As noted, vibrational massage — as opposed to deep tissue massage — is typical for adjustable bases, and this base features three massage settings that vibrate the entire bed.
  • Under-bed lighting. You can push a button on the remote that activates a dim light under the bed that can help you see in a dark room, illuminating your path and reducing fall risk.
  • USB ports. This model also includes two USB ports to charge your devices — an advanced feature — with one port on the left side of the base and the other on the right. However, each port is located in a hard-to-reach spot under the head of the bed, so the use of this feature may not be appropriate for everyone.
  • Adjustable legs. You can set the legs of the base to be 2, 3 or 8 inches tall, depending on what is most comfortable or safe for you and your sleeping partner (if you have one). If you have questions or concerns about the ideal height of your bed overall, especially if you have mobility issues, you can talk with your health care provider.

Which is better: the split king or queen base?

Both sizes of the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base performed equally well in our testing. But there are certain factors that may make one a better fit for you.

For instance, if you have a sleeping partner, the split king may suit you and your partner better if you have different sleep preferences. To this point, Cory Calendine, an orthopedic surgeon at Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee in Franklin, Tennessee, says no two partners sleep the same way. He says he may see one patient who needs accommodation for a painful condition while their partner sleeps without any issues. “A split-king adjustable base was the perfect solution for my wife and me,” he says. He says he prefers to sleep on his back with gentle elevation of his head and feet, while his wife likes to sleep on her side without adjustments. If you can relate to this scenario, and you’re interested in this Nectar base, you may want to consider the split king.

That said, if price is more of a priority — say, if you want to spend less than $1,700 — opting for the queen size can save you a few hundred dollars over the split king.

Is the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base right for you?

This answer depends on a number of factors. So if you’re trying to decide whether this adjustable bed frame is right for you, you may want to ask yourself the following questions.

Do I want advanced features?

As opposed to some models on the market, this Nectar base includes advanced features, such as a companion app that allows adjustments via Bluetooth, two USB charging ports and a zero-clearance design. It also has five preset positions and two customizable preset buttons that let you save your favorite additional positions.

Am I easily awoken?

If so, and if you have a sleeping partner, this base may be a good fit. In our testing, this model had the quietest and smoothest motor of all the bases we assessed, which means you’re less likely to be awoken if your partner changes the bed’s position while you’re sleeping. In addition, the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base’s split king may work especially well for couples that include light sleepers because it has two independently adjustable sides.

Do I have trouble getting out of bed?

If you do, this adjustable base — like others — may help. As Calendine confirms, adjustable bases can help older adults get out of bed easier, especially when managing conditions that affect mobility. For instance, this model’s TV mode raises the head of the bed, making it easier to get into a seated position. This TV mode may be especially helpful for older adults who have trouble getting out of bed, as tester Bryan noted this mode propped him up so much that it felt like he was sitting in a chair.

Even with these potential benefits, however, Calendine and other experts we consulted said adjustable bases should not replace professional treatment. So if you're experiencing weakness or pain when getting in and out of bed, or have questions about your mobility, consider talking with your health care provider about the best plan for you. Calendine says he often asks his patients about their mattress quality and age as part of his assessment, and he may recommend physical therapy for additional relief.

And now we’ve come to the end of our questions to consider. If you’re still not sure whether this electronic bed frame could work for you — or want to see how it stacks up to our other top picks — feel free to check out our review of the best adjustable beds

FAQs

Are Nectar adjustable bed frames good?

Yes, the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base we assessed performed well in our tests. Its easy-to-use remote control offers multiple settings to accommodate different sleeping positions. Couples also may appreciate its quiet and smooth motor, which is unlikely to wake a sleeping partner. Plus, this model comes with more advanced features than some other adjustable bases, including a companion app, underbed lighting and a zero-clearance design, which indicates you can use it on an existing platform bed frame or place it directly on the floor.

What is the return policy for a Nectar adjustable bed frame?

Nectar allows returns within the first 60 days of purchase for adjustable bases. This timeframe is generous since some companies, like Saatva, don’t allow returns on adjustable bases.

For companies that allow returns, timeframes typically range from 30 to 60 days.

How long does a Nectar adjustable bed frame last?

Nectar estimates its adjustable base can last 10 to 20 years, on average. The company specifically offers a two-year warranty on its furniture products to address manufacturer defects.

Can I only use a Nectar adjustable base with a Nectar mattress?

You may be able to pair an adjustable base from Nectar with a mattress from a different company. In fact, industry guidelines generally recommend pairing adjustable bases with memory foam, latex or hybrid mattresses because these mattress types tend to be flexible and form more easily to different adjustable base positions. That said, each mattress brand and the materials from which mattresses are made can vary and may affect a bed's ability to adjust on a base. Also note that some innerspring mattresses may be too thick or too stiff to work well with an adjustable base, so you may want to prioritize models that are typically more flexible.
