Brooklyn Bedding Review: 3 High-Performing Options

We put the company’s most popular beds through rigorous testing to assess comfort, support, cooling and more

The products and services discussed on this page have been independently tested and researched. AARP may earn a commission through affiliate links, but this does not influence our objective reviews. Proceeds earned go toward supporting our mission.

Brooklyn Bedding is one of the best-performing, yet affordably priced mattress brands that our Smart Picks team has tested. Of the three models we’ve tested, two earned an overall score of 9.9 out of 10, and the third snagged a score of 9.5 out of 10.

After consulting with medical experts, speaking with focus group participants ages 50-plus and putting three Brooklyn Bedding mattresses through our rigorous lab testing process, we’ve highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of each model.

Read on for our review of three of Brooklyn Bedding’s most popular models: the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, Brooklyn Bedding Co pperFlex and Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling. (All models tested were queen-size mattresses.)

Comparing Brooklyn Bedding models

What we like about Brooklyn Bedding

Brooklyn Bedding designs and manufactures its own beds,a rarity among mattress retailers. The family-owned and operated brand uses this in-house practice as a way to make the company’s mattresses more affordable.

We appreciate that the company consistently nabs high scores in most of our tests. For example, testers rated pressure relief and spinal alignment above-average for the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex — also giving the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling an above-average rating for pressure and a satisfactory score for spinal alignment.

The company offers competitive prices. The average price for these beds is about $1,400 — about $705 cheaper than the average price of the beds we recommend in our best mattresses for back pain list, where the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is our pick for “best value.”

We also like the company’s 120-night free trial period and limited lifetime warranty, which provides full coverage for defects for 10 years. While these terms aren’t as generous as the industry-leading 365-night free trial period and lifetime warranties offered by brands like DreamCloud and Saatva, Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are more affordably priced.

Survey highlight

The answers from our survey respondents who had purchased a Brooklyn Bedding mattress placed value on finding cost-effective mattresses. All four respondents said they had a budget between $500 to $2,000.

However, we would like to see Brooklyn Bedding offer an option for white-glove delivery — delivery and set-up of your new bed and removal of your old one (if you have one) — like DreamCloud and Saatva do. All Brooklyn Bedding mattresses arrive at your doorstep in a large box. Buyers are responsible for moving the bed into their homes and completing set-up themselves. Bed-in-a-box mattresses can be heavy and difficult to handle. So if you’d like to order from Brooklyn Bedding, plan ahead and consider recruiting help from a neighbor, family member or local moving company.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Exceptional pressure relief in all tested sleep positions
  • High bounce
  • Relatively wallet-friendly

Cons

  • So-so cooling
  • Middling motion isolation

Features

  • Type: Hybrid
  • Firmness options: Soft, medium or firm
  • Best sleeping positions: Back, side and stomach

Key takeaways from our testing

Relieves pressure in all tested positions. We tested the medium model of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. Allison, a 51-year-old side sleeper and tester who prefers a firm bed, gave the mattress perfect ratings for pressure relief and spinal alignment across all sleep positions that we tested. “I think this is super comfortable with a good combination of softness and firmness,” she said while lying on her side. “I am very comfortable on my back, and it feels great on my stomach as well.” This bed also earned a top-level score for affordability, since the retail price for a queen is less than $1,500.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid’s springy coils give the bed a high bounce, and the two top layers of foam help ease pressure.

Excellent bounce helps boost movement. Allison said she could feel the bed’s responsive bounce. “It really helped me when I stood up,” she said. “I didn’t need to use my hands at all to stand.” When our lab team conducted a bounce test, which involves dropping a 15-pound ball to measure how high it rebounds, the ball bounced 19 inches high, garnering a perfect score in that test. Allison also said she liked the bed’s strong edges, awarding it a very good score for edge support. “The edge is very defined on this mattress,” she said. “I don’t feel at risk of falling off the edges at all.”

Average cooling and motion isolation. Our testers and lab team weren’t as impressed by the bed’s motion isolation and temperature regulation — two important considerations for couples. During our ripple test, our lab team assessed motion isolation by placing a liquid-filled beaker on one side of the mattress while moving on the other side and recording how much the liquid shifted. The liquid sloshed most when the tester changed positions, and the mattress received a fair score for that test. Older adults who are light sleepers may be awoken more easily by their partner’s movements in this bed.

Our cooling gun test, in which we use a sensor to measure how much heat a bed retains, showed that the mattress experienced significant heat build up. After placing a heating pad on the bed for one minute, the surface temperature rose by more than 80 degrees. However, it cooled by 17.3 degrees a minute after the heating pad was removed, earning an average score. People who sleep hot, or couples who are sensitive to movement, may prefer the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex instead.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Near-perfect pressure relief and spinal support
  • High-scoring features for couples
  • Low-priced

Cons

  • Not bouncy
  • Dense memory foam may make it harder to switch positions

Features

  • Type: Memory foam
  • Firmness options: Medium
  • Best sleeping positions: Back, side and stomach

Key takeaways from our testing

Cushion and support on a budget. The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex is the least expensive bed in this review and is priced under $700 before any discounts. Yet, it doesn’t skimp on pressure relief and support. Lauren, a 54-year-old tester who sleeps on her stomach and prefers a soft mattress, said the mattress kept her spine “nice and straight” while she was on her side. On her back, she said her “lower spine is definitely filled in and being supported,” and on her stomach she felt “super comfortable” and “didn’t feel any strain.” Lauren awarded the bed a near-perfect score for both pressure relief and spinal alignment for side sleeping — and she gave it perfect scores for both of those measures for stomach and back sleeping.

Nice option for couples. Couples who want a cool, motion-isolating bed may like this option. Memory foam mattresses tend to perform well on motion isolation tests because foam absorbs motion rather than amplifying it like metal coils would. So our lab team wasn’t surprised when this bed earned almost-perfect scores on our motion isolation tests. However, its high score for temperature regulation was unexpected. Memory foam tends to trap heat, but this mattress earned an exceptional rating for the cooling gun test. This result may be due to the copper-infused foam, which offers “moisture wicking and heat regulation,” according to the company.

AARP Smart Picks

Dense memory foam may make you feel “sunken” in bed. Memory foam tends to perform well at relieving pressure and isolating motion, but the trade-off is that it offers less bounce. That’s because memory foam beds do not include springs that assist movement. Instead, the body sinks into the foam. In our bounce test, the CopperFlex recorded a bounce of 14 inches, resulting in a poor rating. The dense memory foam and lack of bounce may make it harder for older adults with mobility issues to move in bed. If you want to be able to move more easily, you may want to consider the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stellar cooling capabilities
  • Perfect edge support
  • Superb bounce to help movement

Cons

  • May be less comfortable for stomach sleepers
  • Light sleepers may feel movement

Features

  • Type: Hybrid
  • Firmness options: Soft, medium or firm
  • Best sleeping positions: Back and side

Key takeaways from our testing

Standout heat regulation. We tested the medium option for firmness for the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling. This bed lived up to its name during our cooling gun test: It registered an increase of only 10 degrees — one of the best scores we’ve ever recorded that resulted in a perfect rating for that test. “The cover feels cool and slick,” said Donna, a 60-year-old tester and side sleeper.

Stable edges and high bounce. Donna said she loved how she could sleep on her side while close to the edge without feeling like she might roll off. “I really like the edge support because I do sit on my bed a lot to change my shoes or to get changed,” she said. “I don't need my hands to support myself; the bed does all the work.” Donna’s experience reflects our bounce test results — the Aurora Luxe Cooling recorded a 20.5-inch bounce, which is a top-notch score.

May not be ideal for some stomach or light sleepers. Donna said this bouncy hybrid was comfortable in the side sleeping position, and she noted good alignment for the length of her spines. But she did have specific feedback on the stomach sleeping position: “Lying on my stomach I feel like my weight is centering more in my hips,” she said. “So that area is dipping in and putting pressure on my lower back. I need more give in my shoulders and more support in my hips.” Given this potential for pressure, this bed may not be the best fit for stomach sleepers or combination sleepers who switch positions throughout the night.

This mattress also earned a middling score for motion isolation, which means light sleepers who sleep with a partner may feel their partner change positions. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a good alternative for combination sleepers who want well-rounded comfort, while the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex may be a better option for motion isolation.

How much do Brooklyn Bedding mattresses cost?

The Brooklyn Bedding mattresses in this review retail for between $665 and $2,265 for a queen size. That said, the company runs frequent promotions and holiday sales that can save shoppers hundreds of dollars. For example, we’ve seen the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling dip from $2,265 to about $1,500 for a queen.

Brooklyn Bedding also provides a discount of 5 percent to “past and present” military members, first responders, educators, medical providers and students. But the company’s website only allows the use of one discount code per order, and it notes that the “use of discount codes on sale items depends on the terms and conditions of the specific promotion.”

Is a Brooklyn Bedding mattress right for you?

Good sleep is important and there can be many considerations, including your mattress. If you’re not sure if a Brooklyn Bedding mattress is right for you, you can ask yourself the following questions.

Am I on a tight budget?

If you’re trying to minimize costs, the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex may be the best choice. Its regular price is $665, but during sales, the price may be as low as $500. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is more expensive at $1,465. But based on its high performance and lower price we frequently name it “best value” in our mattress roundups.

Do I change positions when I sleep?

If yes, you may find the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid most comfortable. It earned perfect scores in spinal alignment and pressure relief across all sleeping positions that we tested, making it one of the most versatile models in this review. The bed is also bouncy — which makes it easier to switch positions if you’re a combination sleeper — and the edges are supportive to help protect you from falling.

Am I sensitive to movement?

If you’re a light sleeper who snoozes with a partner or a pet, consider prioritizing a bed with excellent motion isolation to prevent disturbances and to help prevent waking frequently. The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex mattress has the best motion isolation scores in this review.

Sleep disruption can have significant consequences, says Dhara Shah, a doctor of physical therapy in Brookhaven, Georgia. “Sleep is vital for tissue repair and muscle recovery, especially in older adults, so disruptions can slow healing, increase muscle stiffness and inflammation, and contribute to chronic pain,” she says.

Am I a hot sleeper?

If you tend to sleep hot, consider that the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling and the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Memory Foam earned perfect scores for temperature regulation. You also may find that keeping your room cool and comfortable can help you sleep well. “Your body naturally cools at night to promote sleep, so a cool room around 65 degrees is generally recommended,” Shah says.

Do I have mobility challenges?

Some older adults may benefit from hybrid beds with bouncy coil systems to assist with bed mobility, says Casey Lee, a board-certified clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy at ATI Physical Therapy in Plano, Texas. “Coils make it less fatiguing to maneuver in bed or change positions,” she says. When possible, she advises looking for reinforced perimeter coils or extra foam casing on the edges to make it easier to stand from bed.

On this list, the 12.25-inch-tall Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and 13.25-inch-tall Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling are the bounciest options with reliable, reinforced edges. However, Shah says some older adults may want to opt for shorter 10-inch beds for safety.

Address your mobility

If you’re having trouble with mobility at home or in your community, consider visiting a physical therapist for an evaluation, says Casey Lee, a  board-certified clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy at ATI Physical Therapy in Plano, Texas. Physical therapy can help improve strength, balance and coordination. Talk with your health care provider if you have any questions.

Do I have back pain?

If so, consider your needs and preferences when shopping for a mattress. Older adults can experience back pain for several reasons. Talking with your health care provider or seeking guidance from a physical therapist may help find the root cause of pain, Lee says. You also can ask your health care provider if a certain kind of mattress can help alleviate your pain or help you sleep better.

Lee often recommends medium-firm mattresses with zoned support along the center of the bed to support the spine, as these beds can help maintain a neutral spine while relieving pressure on the hips and shoulders. To this point, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling may be a good option because our testers found it tends to feel more firm (as opposed to merely medium) and offers ample zoned support for most sleeping positions.

Brooklyn Bedding compared to other popular brands

How does Brooklyn Bedding stack up to other companies? Here’s what we’ve found during our testing.

Saatva vs. Brooklyn Bedding

Saatva tends to be more expensive than Brooklyn Bedding by several hundred dollars, but its purchase terms are more generous: a one-year trial period, lifetime warranty and complimentary white-glove delivery with every mattress. Meanwhile, Brooklyn Bedding manages to maintain better affordability due to in-house design and manufacturing.

Both Saatva and Brooklyn Bedding have a range of models, including those made with all memory foam and those that are hybrid and made with a combination of foam and coils. In our testing, Brooklyn Bedding mattresses tend to outscore Saatva in affordability and comfort features such as pressure relief and spinal alignment, but not by much. And they tend to be  close in performance when it comes to motion isolation, cooling and edge support strength, depending on the model.

Check out our Saatva review for more information.

DreamCloud vs. Brooklyn Bedding

Brooklyn Bedding offers a limited lifetime warranty, while DreamCloud offers a lifetime warranty. DreamCloud mattresses are more expensive than those from Brooklyn Bedding, but frequent promotions bring prices down to a competitive level — some higher-end DreamCloud models cost less than Brooklyn Bedding’s similar line with discounts applied.

Our testing found Brooklyn Bedding tends to score higher than DreamCloud overall, largely due to its lower baseline pricing and generally higher scores for pressure relief. Brooklyn Bedding tends to offer options that offer better heat regulation, while DreamCloud mattresses often isolate motion better for couples.

FAQs

Is the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid good for back pain?

It may be, depending on your needs and budget. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is our “best value” pick in our review of the best mattresses for back pain. It was the highest-scoring mattress in its price range and the lowest-priced on that list by about $200.

Is Brooklyn Bedding a luxury mattress brand?

Brooklyn Bedding offers basic models and those it categorizes as “luxe” at relatively affordable prices compared to other brands. For example, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid and CopperFlex models are value picks, while the Aurora Luxe Cooling is a more luxurious model.

Is a hybrid mattress like the Brooklyn Bedding Hybrid better than a memory foam mattress?

Not necessarily. Choosing between a hybrid and a memory foam mattress is a matter of preference. “While hybrid mattresses are generally recommended for older adults who need extra support, memory foam can still be a good option for those who prioritize pressure relief and have fewer mobility limitations,” says Shah, the doctor of physical therapy in Georgia. She reminds her patients that what works well for one person with joint pain might not work for another, even with similar conditions.

Does the Brooklyn Bedding Hybrid Signature work with an adjustable base?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid had an average performance with an adjustable base during our testing. It doesn’t flex with adjustments as well as other models in this review. The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex was more compatible with adjustable base movements during testing, earning a perfect rating for base compatibility.
