More than 25 years ago, psychologist Neil Clark Warren founded eharmony. That makes it one of the oldest online dating platforms still operating. It’s also one of the largest, with 2.3 million messages exchanged weekly, according to the company. In fact, in 2026, when we surveyed 300 adults ages 50 to 85 who had used an online dating platform in the last three years, eharmony was one of the most popular choices. Also, respondents who used eharmony were 15 percent more likely to say that they wished they had signed up sooner compared to respondents from all 22 dating platforms in our survey.
Could this online dating platform be right for you? For this eharmony review, our AARP Smart Picks team tested the platform’s features in addition to speaking at length with real users ages 66 to 72 in a focus group.
Read on to learn about the pros and cons of eharmony, what to consider before signing up and whether the platform could be a fit for you. For more information about our research process, read how we test online dating services for older adults.
What is eharmony — and what are some key features?
Founded in 2000, eharmony is one of the most well-known dating sites. The platform seeks to help people find love based on compatibility. When we queried our online dating survey respondents who used eharmony, 59 percent of people said they chose it because of the company’s reputation for security. That’s 30 percent above the average of all brands we surveyed.
eharmony isn’t like the swipe-based dating apps that can take just a few minutes to set up (and even less time to decide if you want to match). It’s geared toward serious daters who want a lasting connection.
Based on its performance in our tests overall, eharmony earned a spot on our list of the best online dating sites for seniors by having the most in-depth profiles. This is a notable feature, as some online daters take issue with the quality of profiles that they’ve seen on dating platforms, our recent focus group of older adults found.
In addition, eharmony has other potentially beneficial features. For example, it lets you add videos to your profile and requires you to fill out an 80-question form about yourself when you sign up, which the site uses to provide a compatibility rating for potential matches. Your answers also build an in-depth personality report that’s viewable to potential matches.
While a free, basic plan is available (more on this in a bit), eharmony offers three paid subscriptions: Light, Plus and Unlimited. You get more features when you select a higher tier. For example, with Premium Light you can only see other users’ profile pictures, but with Premium Unlimited you can view all photos that a user uploads to their profile.
One optional part of eharmony’s sign-up process is verification via SMS (short message service — the technology used to send text messages) to confirm your identity. You’ll receive a text with a security code to enter on the platform. People who complete this step get an SMS-verified symbol on their profiles. This feature may offer peace of mind for some daters, but it’s not the most thorough verification process we’ve seen. Platforms like SeniorMatch, for instance, offer a live camera verification step that matches your face to the picture you uploaded.
For daters seeking love
eharmony positions itself as a dating site for people looking for love, reporting it has “created over 2 million successful relationships in over 125 countries.” The data from our 2025 AARP online dating survey support this assertion — most respondents who were using the platform said they were looking for a long-term romantic partner.

Key takeaways from our testing
Focused on long-term compatibility. Everything on eharmony starts with a required 80-question quiz that the platform uses to create a compatibility rating for each potential match. Once you complete the quiz, you build your profile with typical information requested by dating platforms, including your gender preferences, occupation and relationship goals. Plus, like Hinge and Bumble, you can add videos to your profile.
Our testers gave eharmony an impressive 4 out of 5 rating for the platform’s matching process. “Everyone on eharmony had at least one similar interest to mine and was within the parameters I had set up,” one lab tester said. “I really liked how it was focused on compatibility matching instead of just random matching or location-based,” the tester added. “Many of the users are looking for a long-term relationship and not casual hookups.”
