October is the perfect time to enjoy some Halloween candy — and for Amazon Prime viewers, it brings a new documentary about the late, great Canadian comic actor John Candy (who died in 1994 at 43). Sports fans will gravitate to a new season of live-streamed NBA games and a docuseries about Allen Iverson, while churchgoers will welcome a new season about the post-Goliath life of the Bible’s David. And expect some otherworldly twists in Harlan Coban’s new thriller series featuring Bill Nighy, 75, as a doctor who appears as a ghost to urge his son to solve a small graveyard’s worth of unsolved murders.
Coming October 1
Play Dirty (2025)
Mark Wahlberg, 54, stars as a master thief who’s as quick with a quip as he is with his ever-handy pistol. In this gritty new thriller from action auteur Shane Black (The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), he teams up with some other heist experts (including Rosa Salazar and LaKeith Stanfield) in pursuit of a treasure worth $1 billion. The only problem is they’ll have to outwit (and outshoot) the New York mafia, a ruthless billionaire and a South American dictator’s army.
Coming October 3
Inside the NHL, Season 2
Prime continues its investment in sports content with a second season of this six-episode docuseries, offering a deep dive into the most recent pro hockey season. Expect behind-the-rink looks at superstars like Sidney Crosby and Anže Kopitar, as well as the challenges facing Ottawa Senators left winger Brady Tkachuk skating in the shadow of his older brother, Matthew, who led the Florida Panthers to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025.
Coming October 5
House of David , Season 2
In the first season of this series from the faith-based Wonder Project, lowly Bethlehem shepherd David (Michael Iskander) overcame the odds in his head-to-head battle with Philistine warrior Goliath. Now he finds himself drawn into a bitter rivalry with Israeli King Saul (Ali Suliman), whom he’s destined to replace. Despite a biblical pedigree à la The Chosen, this slickly produced series has the look and feel of a gritty swords-and-sandals epic..
