The Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave oodles of kudos to grownup talents when it announced the nominees for its Golden Globe Awards on Dec. 12 — but there were some surprising snubs that have showbiz fans scratching their heads. The Globes are seen as precursors to the Oscars, giving hints of who may win, so all of Hollywood scrutinizes the results closely for clues. The No. 1 favorite 2022 film of viewers over 50 (and others), Top Gun: Maverick, got a Best Picture nomination, but star Tom Cruise, 60, got no Best Actor nom. Julia Roberts, 55, was honored for playing Watergate’s Martha Mitchell on her low-profile limited series Gaslit, but not for her huge film hit Ticket to Paradise. Will Smith’s gripping Civil War epic Emancipation was ignored, as was Amazon’s fantastically expensive The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power, while HBO Max’s rival blockbuster fantasy House of the Dragon got two noms, for Best Drama and Best Actress. Yellowstone, a No. 1 show usually ignored by awards groups, earned a Best Actor nomination for Kevin Costner, 67. And even though relatively few have seen the Hollywood historical epic Babylon (to be released Dec. 23), it scored five nominations, including for star Brad Pitt, 58.

Almost all of the most-nominated shows and movies featured talents over 50. The Banshees of Inisherin led the film field with eight nominations (including Brendan Gleeson, 67), followed by Everything Everywhere All at Once with six (including Michelle Yeoh, 60, Ke Huy Quan, 51, and Jamie Lee Curtis, 64, who is also the winner of AARP’s 2023 Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award). The top TV nominee was Abbott Elementary (with five noms, including breakout star Sheryl Lee Ralph, 65).

The winners will be revealed in the 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony, which airs live Jan. 10, 8 p.m., on NBC and Peacock, hosted by Jerrod Carmichael).
