Who says the best-dressed list is reserved for the young and hip? Traditional awards show red carpet roundups sometimes overlook mature faces, but at AARP we know that having fun with fashion is timeless.

AARP’s Alison Maxwell and Nancy Kerr round up the best-dressed stars over 50.

Jean Smart, 69

The Hacks star and Emmy winner stunned in a white, long-sleeved, figure-hugging Christian Siriano gown that she bypassed for last year’s Emmy Awards. “He actually made it for me last year, but I wore a different one instead. And then we saw it again and we went ‘This is fabulous, what were we thinking?’” Smart says she’s impressed with the audience that Hacks — an HBO Max show about an aging comedian paired with a young comedy writer — has attracted. “It’s astonishing and humbling and thrilling. But I do think it’s fun for women to see somebody who’s not 35 out there having fun and kicking ass a little bit.”

Rhea Seehorn, 50

The Better Call Saul star’s fiery red Georges Chakra gown featured a sexy triangular cutout at the waist and flame-worthy detailing at the neckline. Lorraine Schwartz jewels complemented the look. On selecting her gown: “First you get rid of the ones that don’t zip, so that was like 20 right there,” she said. “It was hard because there are [dresses] where you feel a little more in your safe space of like, ‘This is something I would always wear,’ and then you’re like, ‘Yeah, but that’s not tonight. Let’s push a bit.’”

Mariska Hargitay, 58, and Christopher Meloni, 61

The Law and Order: SVU favorites made an arresting duo. Hargitay looked stylish in a long-sleeved gown with plunging neckline and high-cut leg while Meloni sported a classic black tux. Noting that their longtime on-screen chemistry as detectives Benson and Stabler is “effortless,” Meloni waxed a bit nostalgic. “If you had told me I’d have the career I have at this time in ... the twilight of my life ... It’s just a dream come true.”

Connie Britton, 55

Five-time Emmy nominee Connie Britton looked glam in a hot pink spaghetti-strapped Monique Lhuillier gown with a floor-length side-shoulder cape. Accessorized with custom-made Lorraine Schwartz peridot jewelry, the White Lotus actress (and supporting actress nominee) joked that she might just take the baubles home.

Laverne Cox, 50

Strike a pose: The four-time Emmy nominee hosted the red carpet preshow on E! in a Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture gown by Olivier Rousteing. The “straight off the runway” look was a “love letter to Jean Paul Gaultier,” the designer who created Madonna’s famous cone bra for her 1990 “Blonde Ambition” tour.

Michael Keaton, 71

Michael Keaton nabbed the Emmy for best actor in a limited series for playing an Appalachian doctor in Dopesick, the Hulu series about America’s opioid crisis. Joking that his face hurt “from all the fake smiling,” the actor also took top honors for his dapper two-tone tux with coordinating blue-tinged glasses.

Sandra Oh, 51

Forget pink, the Killing Eve nominee was pretty in a purple pantsuit! The sparkly number, from Rodarte, featured a down-to-there V neckline, paired with high-waisted trousers and an effortless, vibrant blazer.

Laura Linney, 58

Tiered perfection! The Ozark nominee perfected the peplum look in a white Christian Siriano mock-neck gown accented with black ribbon trim. “My beautiful friend Laura looking so chic tonight,” Siriano posted on Instagram.

Amy Poehler, 50

Double Emmy nominee (Making It and Lucy and Desi) and SNL superstar Amy Poehler turned heads in a sexy blue sequined Halston halter gown with a keyhole neckline paired with gold bangle bracelets on each arm.

Sofia Vergara, 50

Modern Family alum Sofia Vergara sparkled in a form-fitting canary yellow spaghetti-strapped dress designed by Laura Basci. The America’s Got Talent judge kept the accessories simple so the sequined dress, bold makeup from Dior Beauty and killer curves could take center stage.
