Tom Cruise stars in the musical 'Rock of Ages,' just one of several films coming in the summer of 2012 that may appeal to grownups as well as youngsters.

Two years ago, the movie industry was rocked by the unexpected success of two high-octane action movies — RED and The Expendables. Both films featured stars 50 and over shooting, driving and romancing their ways to blockbuster status.

But here’s what really caught Hollywood’s attention: Not only older audiences flocked to see Sly Stallone, Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren kick serious bad-guy butt, but kids showed up in droves, as well.

That success caught the studios flatfooted — but finally, two years later, they’re back with a full slate of movies they hope will tap into that same vein of cross-generational summer fun.

Want a taste? See the Sneak Peek sidebar, which details the stars and stories. Even though some of the included trailers are very short, you'll get a sense of the tone and spirit of these five diverse offerings.

Discuss these summer treats and others on the Movies for Grownups Message Board. For example, there's another Snow White movie coming (take the grandkids?); G.I. Joe is on the way (ditto?); and what the heck is Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter?
