When the HKS Atlanta office lease ended, they saw an opportunity. They didn’t want the chance to experiment go to waste; they wanted to dig into the potential of brain capital and explore the impact of brain-healthy workplaces. What did they learn?
- They reduced our real estate by allocating less than 20% of rentable square footage (RSF) to individual workstations and increasing shared and flexible workspaces. At the same time, the office headcount grew from 55 to 85 FTEs. The RSF per employee dropped from 178 to 115, representing a 35% reduction. That’s significant savings in rent and operational costs.
- Through training, leadership commitment, and continuous communication, the team transformed their work style. They self-reported reductions in multi-tasking and a 37% increase in the daily completion of focused tasks.
- Employees shared that taking regular breaks helped them feel more replenished and ready to tackle the tasks at hand—resulting in a more energized, fulfilled team.
- Staff retention rates increased therefore saving cost on recruitment, new hire training, and lost knowledge.
- Engagement scores on their annual Gallup engagement survey also increased. People are leaning into their teams and their work, resulting in better work product and effectiveness.
