Members of NRTA: AARP's Educator Community design unique projects and collaborate with their local organizations to provide support to older adults and other individuals in need. In partnership with AARP, many individuals also leverage their background in education and serve as instructors in driver safety courses or assist low and middle income families with tax counseling.

NRTA With Our Youth!

The NRTA With Our Youth! program provides recognition for retired educators and youth who work together to address the needs of younger Americans and the broader community.  

The program began in 1997, when NRTA made a three-year pledge at the President’s Summit for America’s Future held in Philadelphia, to serve 1.5 million youth in 2,000 communities with 45 million service hours through its affiliated state retired educators associations (REAs). The goal was met and exceeded and NRTA’s With Our Youth! Award continues to recognize the important role retired educators play in our communities and in the lives of our nation’s youth.

NRTA and our affiliate network of REAs believe in the tremendous potential of America’s youth and in taking action to ensure all children have the resources they need in order to be, and become, the best they can be. State and local REAs continue to serve over 500,000 youth in more than 1,000 communities annually.

Award Nomination And Guidelines

Each year, NRTA gives national With Our Youth! volunteer recognition awards in two categories to recognize the participation and projects supported by:

  • Local Retired Educators Associations
  • Individual Volunteers

Awards are given to projects that best meet one or several of the five key resources for America’s youth inspired by America’s Promise Alliance:

  1. An ongoing relationship with a caring adult
  2. A healthy start in life
  3. Safe places to learn and grow
  4. A marketable skill upon graduation
  5. An opportunity to serve in their communities  

After spending a career nurturing and educating our nation’s children, retired educators remain a powerful, steady and respected presence in America’s communities by serving children today. The With Our Youth! program is a chance each year to spotlight the dedicated spirit of retired educators who continue to give back to youth in their communities

Awards Criteria

The impact of the volunteer service with youth must be clearly documented in the nomination. 

The service may be done in groups (volunteers or students) or on a one-to-one basis (one volunteer working with one child, or a group of volunteers working with individual children). 

The service is to be done with youth who are not relatives. In groups, related children may be included provided the volunteer(s) work with all of the youth, not just the related youth. 

The volunteers receive no compensation for their service other than for transportation to the volunteer site, meals during the time of volunteer work or for materials used in the project.
