NRTA: AARP’s Educator Community is America’s leading national organization representing the interests of more than 850,000 educators age 50+. We work with a network of state-based Retired Educators Associations (REAs) across the nation to collaborate and provide strategic support.
We invite you to learn more about NRTA and how to engage with us, as well how to connect with your REA.
The mission of NRTA: AARP’s Educator Community is to create real possibilities to support America’s working and retired educators by protecting their financial security and fostering collaboration and volunteerism.
NRTA is the seed that grew into AARP. Ethel Percy Andrus founded NRTA: AARP’s Educator Community (then known as the National Retired Teachers Association) in 1947 to address the economic challenges and health insurance needs of educators in retirement.
NRTA: AARP’s Educator Community programs focus on supporting America’s working and retired educators by protecting their financial security and fostering collaboration and volunteerism. We offer programs in three key areas: community service, financial security and leadership.
Retired educators believe it is important to serve, not be served.
Education professionals must have financial resources to maintain their standard of living in retirement.
Leadership development helps us solve today’s challenges and make a difference.
NRTA’s largest and most impactful collaboration has been through its 50-year link to a network of state Retired Educator Associations (REAs). The state REAs are independently incorporated non-profit associations that advocate for the well-being of retired educators.
NRTA works directly with a network of state-based Retired Educators Associations (REAs) across the nation to collaborate and provide strategic support. Find out more information or join your local REA.
The NRTA supports the work of the National Institute on Retirement Security (NIRS), a research and education not-for-profit organization in Washington, DC.
