Key takeaways

  • Dude ranches now span the country, not just the West.
  • Many ranches bundle lodging, meals and activities, which can simplify planning and budgeting.
  • Beyond horseback riding, options include hiking, fishing, water sports, kids’ programs and evening entertainment.

When you think of a dude ranch, cattle drives and cowboys might come to mind. Some of the most iconic images of the American West play out on horseback, on the open range. But the offerings from today’s ranch vacations might surprise you.

From the ponderosa pine forests of Oregon to the swamplands of central Florida, ranch vacations offer immersive experiences in nature that can be as rustic or luxurious as you like — with activities for every age group, too.

My family has found that each ranch we’ve visited has its own offerings and surprises. Our activities have evolved as my kids have grown older (not to mention as we’ve all gotten more comfortable on horseback).

A sense of nostalgia is a given. “People are drawn to locations that remind them of simpler times, quiet places and a chance to truly reconnect with nature, animals and the people around them,” says Bryce Albright, executive director of the Dude Ranchers’ Association, which represents 89 ranches across 10 states and British Columbia.

Plus, a ranch is a great place to spend time with family or friends, a top motivator for leisure travelers 50-plus, according to AARP’s most recent Travel Trends survey.

And activities? Bountiful and go well beyond horseback riding, says Albright, pointing to bird-watching, hiking, exploring national parks and fly-fishing as some of the many adventures you can have.

The all-inclusive nature of the budget and activity programs for many ranch vacations can be appealing, too. “Ranch vacations come together as a true ‘done-for-you’ package, offering ease of planning, a breadth of activities and the simple pleasure of enjoying the open country and outdoors together,” says Alicia Pattengale, executive director of the Montana Dude Ranchers’ Association, which represents 15 Montana guest ranches with all-inclusive rates starting from $2,700 per person for five to seven nights.

Whether you’re looking for something luxurious or down-home, consider these locations in Arizona, Colorado, New York, Texas and beyond for some of the best ranches.

Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo, River Ranch, Florida

Home to a Saturday night rodeo, this Florida ranch, about 100 miles south of Orlando, puts you in unique wilderness along the Kissimmee River. Accommodations include affordable tent and RV camping and lodge rooms, as well as air-conditioned tepees with private patios and Conestoga wagons with barbecue grills. For an extra fee you can try horseback riding, take airboat rides in search of alligators or roll through the wilderness atop a swamp buggy vehicle with giant tires, an experience my then-young kids still rave about for its monster-truck-like appeal.

D&K Ranch, Interlaken, New York

Saddle up in New York’s Finger Lakes region at this authentic horse ranch with cabins and campsites. Located in Finger Lakes National Forest, between lakes Cayuga and Seneca, D&K Ranch is a family-run property (Jolene, the owners’ daughter, is the head wrangler) focused on equine activities. Head out for a trail ride or take riding lessons in the covered arena when you’re not relaxing in one of the affordable cabins or silo accommodations for rent, all with access to firepits and outdoor grills. Attractions in the area include vineyard and winery visits and hiking in the national forest.

Starting rates: Cabins from $100 per night, double occupancy

Drowsy Water Ranch, Granby, Colorado

Two hours northwest of Denver, this 700-acre guest ranch is the real deal and has been welcoming visitors for more than 90 years. My children still remember a steed named Midnight they rode during our family vacation at the ranch one summer (we still have a photo of the horse on our refrigerator). Stay in a stand-alone cabin or the main lodge. Communal meals, supervised kids’ programs, your personal horse to ride for the week, hayrides, river-rafting adventures and more are included. The weekly country dance is a highlight, with line dancing and lots of laughs (yes, I did attempt to channel my inner cowgirl on the dance floor).

Starting rates: From $3,400 per adult for six nights; $500 less if you’re not riding a horse

Adventures include stargazing tours, rafting the McKenzie River, biking 24 miles of paved paths, horseback riding, kayaking Phalarope Lake, pickleball, golf on two championship courses and much more. The ranch’s privately owned accommodations include both budget and luxury homes tucked among the ponderosa pines, aspen groves and fairways. A $20 million lodge opened in 2023, offering a central fireplace, a restaurant and inviting spaces for gathering.

Alisal Ranch, Solvang, California

California may call to mind coastal towns, skiing and vineyard hopping, but the state has ranch adventures up its sleeve, too. This luxurious option is in the rolling hills of Santa Barbara County’s wine country, near the cute, Danish-inspired downtown of Solvang. Grit meets decadence at the 10,500-acre ranch in business since 1946, and activities such as championship golf, guided e-bike rides, bass fishing and horseback riding await. Accommodations include studio rooms, cottages and luxurious homes. Kids 6 and younger stay for free.

Eatons’ Ranch, Wolf, Wyoming

Wyoming ranching lore runs deep. Three ranching brothers who moved from North Dakota to the Cowboy State in 1904 to offer their guests more suitable riding terrain were the original founders of this 7,000-acre working cattle ranch in the Bighorn Mountains. Lodging options include two-bedroom budget cabins and the stone Gold Coast cabins with stone fireplaces along Wolf Creek. Horseback riding is at the heart of everything, with forays into Bighorn National Forest a favorite. Enjoy swimming in the pool and the creek, fly-fishing outings, kids’ programs, Friday night dances and annual summertime happenings that include authentic cowboy events like rodeo week, roping and horse drives.

Starting rates: From $330 per person per night; includes meals and activities

Circle Bar Ranch, Hobson, Montana

It’s impossible to talk about Western ranching without mentioning one of the originals. Montana’s iconic Circle Bar Ranch dates (under a different name) to the 1800s and sits at 5,000 feet of elevation at the base of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. The property reopened as a dude ranch in 2021; much of its history is preserved in the timber guest cabins and the 1902 red barn that hosts dancing and charades. Other ranch activities include horseback riding, archery, spelunking and a kids’ program.

Starting rates: From around $450 per person per night; includes all meals and activities
