Check Your Registration Ahead of the 2026 Election

AARP Wyoming is encouraging voters in Wyoming to be sure their voter registration is current ahead of the 2026 Primary Election in Wyoming, as Secretary of State data suggests nearly 26,000 fewer voters in May 2026 than there were in January of 2025.

Currently, there are 270,925 registered voters in Wyoming. That is down from 296,703 in 2025. The largest county-level reductions in registrations came in Sheridan County (18,053), Sublette County (5,470), and Johnson County (5,454).

What likely happened

Wyoming law requires the state’s County Clerks to purge their voter rolls every two years, meaning clerks are required to remove the names of voters who did not vote in the most recent general election.

In other words, if you voted in the primary election of 2024 but not the general election in 2024, you have likely been purged from the state’s voter rolls. This means you will need to re-register with your county clerk before you are allowed to vote in 2026. You will also need to be registered to vote before you can request an absentee ballot in 2026.

“While the purge is normal, it can be a shock to learn that you aren’t registered to vote when you get to the polls,” said AARP Wyoming’s Tom Lacock. “If you don’t believe you voted in the 2024 general election, it is a good idea to call your local clerk’s office and double check ahead of Election Day.”

Wyoming generally has an ebb and flow in voter registration numbers when voter registrations are purged in February after an election year. For example, higher-than-normal voter turnout in the 2020 Presidential Election, combined with near-record-low turnout in the 2022 General Election, resulted in more than 86,000 voters being purged from the rolls in 2024. However, high voter registration before the 2024 Presidential Election brought Wyoming back to 296,000 registered voters.
