What makes an age-friendly community truly successful? It is not just sidewalks, housing, or transportation. It is also about creating opportunities for people to connect, build relationships, and feel a sense of belonging. The Wauwatosa Health Dept, with funding through Bader Philanthropies, is doing just that through the Tosa Men's Shed, a program that is helping strengthen social connections and improve community well-being.

More Ways to Benefit

Building Connections, One Conversation at a Time

The Men's Shed movement began in Australia in the 1990s as a grassroots effort to address social isolation and improve men's health. The idea was simple: create a welcoming space where men could gather, share experiences, learn new things, and build meaningful friendships, especially during life transitions such as retirement.

Today, that same concept is making a difference in Wauwatosa.

As an AARP Age-Friendly Community, Wauwatosa is committed to creating opportunities that support residents' health, independence, and quality of life. The Tosa Men's Shed is a great example of how the community is putting those goals into action by fostering social participation and inclusion, two key components of age-friendly livability.

More Than a Monthly Gathering

The Tosa Men's Shed provides a welcoming environment where men can gather, share interests, and develop friendships in a way that feels comfortable and natural.

Participants can enjoy:

  • Opportunities to discover new activities and find friends to enjoy them with
  • A safe and welcoming space designed to encourage social connection among men
  • Educational presentations, community outings, and engaging discussions
  • Free snacks and conversation

Best of all, the program is open to all men. You do not need to be a resident of Wauwatosa to participate!

Why It Matters

For many men, especially after retirement, opportunities for social connection can become limited. The Tosa Men's Shed helps fill that gap by creating a welcoming space for friendship, conversation, and community. Through programs like this, the Wauwatosa Health Department is helping reduce social isolation and build a stronger, more age-friendly community.

Join the Conversation

The Tosa Men's Shed meets on the third Friday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the Firefly Room at the Wauwatosa Public Library, unless otherwise noted.
