As Washington voters prepare for the August 4 primary election, AARP Washington, the League of Women Voters, and Northwest Public Broadcasting(NWPB) are helping voters make informed decisions with a new series of nonpartisan candidate interviews.

With the retirement of Rep. Dan Newhouse, voters in Washington's 4th Congressional District will choose a new representative for the first time in more than a decade. To help voters learn where candidates stand on issues that matter to their families and communities, the three organizations partnered to produce a series of short, easy-to-watch video interviews. Each candidate was asked the same questions on topics including family caregiving, Social Security, and the cost of living, ensuring a fair and transparent process.

The organizations invited all candidates who filed for the primary election with the Washington Secretary of State to share their views through a candidate interview. The videos feature those who chose to participate.

Make a Plan to Vote

Ballots for the August 4 primary election must be postmarked by Election Day. Voters are encouraged to return their ballots early—either by mail or at an official drop box—to help ensure they are counted on time.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment among AARP Washington, the League of Women Voters, and Northwest Public Broadcasting to expand access to trusted, nonpartisan information and strengthen civic participation across the district. All three nonprofit organizations are nonpartisan and do not support or oppose any political party or candidate.

"At AARP, we believe that voting is one of the most important ways people can make their voices heard—and that informed voters are empowered voters," said AARP Washington State Director Marguerite Ro. "Our work focuses on helping people understand how, when and where to vote, and where candidates stand on the issues that matter most to their lives."

"Ensuring every voter has equitable access to the information and opportunities they need to participate in elections is central to our mission," said Beverly Johnson-Torelli of the League of Women Voters. "We're proud to partner in this effort to help expand access and support informed participation across our communities."

“At Northwest Public Broadcasting, ensuring people have access to the resources they need to make informed voting decisions is at the heart of what we do," said Annie Warren, director of content. “It’s part of our mission to inform and connect communities across the Northwest.”

Older voters remain a critical part of the electorate in Washington's 4th Congressional District. According to AARP voter analysis, voters age 50 and older made up 64% of the electorate in 2022 and 56% in 2024. In non-presidential elections, turnout among older voters consistently exceeds other age groups, underscoring their significant role in shaping election outcomes.
