AARP Washington welcomes the City of Kirkland to the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. The announcement comes during Older Americans Month, which recognizes the contributions older adults make in communities across the country.

Kirkland joins the Network with a strong age-friendly foundation already in place. The city’s Senior Council, the Peter Kirk Community Center, and programs including EnhanceWellness and Caregiver Support Groups already support older adults in meaningful ways.

Those efforts show that Kirkland has already been doing the kind of work this designation is meant to encourage: making it easier for residents to stay connected, supported, and involved as they age.

“Being a part of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities underlines our commitment to making our community safe, inclusive, and welcoming for all people,” said Mayor Kelli Curtis. “We’re at our best when we encourage everyone — regardless of age, abilities, or background — to participate in an active civic life.”

Enrollment in the Network requires communities to assess their age-friendliness, identify strategies for improvement, and implement those strategies over time. As part of this process, Kirkland will work to ensure that the voices of residents 50 and older are included throughout.

“We congratulate Kirkland on its enrollment in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities,” said Marguerite Ro, AARP Washington State Director. “We look forward to supporting the city as it works to create a community that is more livable and inclusive for people of all ages.”

With its enrollment, Kirkland joins more than 1,000 communities in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities nationwide.
