A Win for Texas Electric Customers: Oncor Rate Increase Limited
Thanks to AARP Texas advocacy, more than 13 million Texans will see a much smaller increase in their electric delivery rates
Texans Spoke Up and It Paid Off
When Oncor Electric Delivery proposed raising electricity rates, AARP Texas stepped in to protect consumers, especially older Texans living on fixed incomes.
Now, after months of advocacy and negotiations, state utility regulators have approved a settlement that sharply reduces the proposed increase, delivering meaningful savings for residential customers across much of North and Central Texas.
What Oncor Originally Proposed
Oncor, a Dallas-area electric utility serving 13 million Texans, initially sought approval for a much higher rate increase that would have driven up electric delivery charges for households across its service territory.
Without intervention, many customers would have faced steeper monthly bills with no ability to choose another provider.
The Final Decision: A Much Smaller Increase
The Texas Public Utility Commission approved a settlement that limits the residential rate increase to just 3 percent—far lower than originally proposed.
AARP Texas intervened directly in the rate case, participated in settlement negotiations, and advocated for a fair outcome for residential customers.
Advocacy That Made a Difference
This outcome did not happen by accident. AARP Texas brought the voices of more than 20,000 Texans who reside in the Oncor service territory into the process -- raising concerns about affordability, fairness, and the real-world impact of higher electric bills on older Texans and their families. Regulators listened.
Why This Matters—Especially for Texans 50+
In Texas, electricity is essential—not optional. Even small increases can force tough choices between cooling a home during extreme heat, paying for groceries, or affording prescriptions.
AARP Texas will continue fighting to keep utility rates reasonable, transparent, and fair.
