Why These Issues Matter
Emergency disaster preparedness and response: From extreme heat to flash flooding, severe weather can create serious challenges for Bexar County residents. The City of San Antonio identifies flooding as one of the area's most common natural disasters, while Bexar County notes that older adults are among those more vulnerable to extreme heat.
Support for working family caregiving: About 5.3 million Texans, or 23% of adults statewide, are family caregivers, helping older parents, spouses and other loved ones live independently. Their responsibilities can include everything from meals and transportation to medications and medical care.
How older adults in Bexar County can age in place: More than 14% of Bexar County residents are age 65 or older, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Local services such as transportation, home repairs and modifications, personal assistance and emergency response systems can help older residents maintain their independence at home.
