National Walking Day: AARP South Carolina Steps Out With the Community
Join AARP South Carolina in Columbia for a free, family-friendly walking treasure hunt that promotes heart and brain health and connects neighbors to local resources.
On National Walking Day, AARP South Carolina is lacing up and stepping out with the community, and you are invited to join us. On Wednesday, April 1, we will celebrate the power of walking with a free, family-friendly walking treasure hunt in Columbia, S.C.
This fun outdoor event is one way AARP South Carolina is participating in National Walking Day and supporting heart health, brain health and social connection for people of all ages, especially those 50-plus.
How AARP South Carolina Is Participating in National Walking Day
National Walking Day is about more than counting steps. It is a reminder that simple, everyday movement can support long-term health, particularly as we age.
AARP South Carolina is proud to participate by hosting a walking treasure hunt that brings together local residents, community organizations and partners that care about wellness, healthy aging and strong communities.
By turning a walk on a neighborhood trail into an engaging activity, we are helping people experience how enjoyable and social moving more can be. This event also highlights AARP’s commitment to being a trusted community collaborator that works alongside local groups to share practical resources that support healthy living.
A Walking Treasure Hunt With a Purpose
This is not a routine stroll around the block. As you walk the trail, you will encounter:
- Treasure hunt clues that guide you along the route
- Trivia questions that keep you thinking as you move
- Brain health challenges that show how physical activity and mental engagement work together
- Small prizes that add a bit of extra fun
Along the way, you can stop at water stations, enjoy light snacks and visit tables hosted by community organizations. These local partners will provide information, tools and resources to support your health, financial security and overall well-being.
Walking, Brain Health and AARP’s Mission
For AARP, events like this connect directly to our mission to empower people to choose how they live as they age. Regular walking can:
- Support heart health
- Help manage stress and improve mood
- Strengthen balance and mobility
- Contribute to brain health, especially when combined with social connection and mental challenges
This event brings those ideas to life. As participants walk, solve puzzles, answer questions and meet neighbors, they engage both body and mind. That combination can play an important role in healthy aging for people 50-plus and their families.
A Community Effort
AARP South Carolina is proud to collaborate with several community partners for this event. These organizations are committed to helping older adults, caregivers and families stay informed and connected. On site, they will:
- Share local programs and services
- Offer brain health and wellness information
- Connect participants to ongoing opportunities to stay active and engaged in the community
Together, AARP South Carolina and our community partners are helping build a stronger, healthier Columbia, one step at a time.
Who Should Attend?
This event is open to individuals and families of all ages. It is especially ideal for:
- Adults 50-plus who want a welcoming way to be more active
- Family members who want to walk together and learn more about brain and heart health
- Caregivers seeking information and local resources
- Anyone who enjoys being outdoors and connecting with neighbors
Participants can walk at their own pace. The focus is on fun, learning and connection, not competition.
