AARP New York Welcomes Final Budget Measure to Address Repeat Reckless Speeding and Make Roads Safer

AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel issued the following statement today in response to Governor Kathy Hochul’s announcement that a proposal to reign in “super speeders” will be included in the final state budget:

“AARP New York is pleased to see this common-sense public safety measure announced in the final budget agreement to help stop reckless repeat speeders and make New York’s streets safer for everyone.

Traffic fatalities are increasing across the state, with older New Yorkers accounting for the greatest number of fatalities. Speeding remains a leading cause of deadly crashes, driven disproportionately by a small number of habitually reckless drivers.

Intelligent Speed Assistance technology is a smart, preventative tool that can reduce dangerous speeding behavior while preserving mobility for responsible drivers. This measure is about protecting pedestrians and helping ensure New Yorkers of all ages can travel safely in their communities.

We look forward to this life-saving measure becoming law with the enactment of the final budget.”
