AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel issued the following statement following New York City Mayor Mamdani's announcement of the new Vision Zero Action Plan:

"Every New Yorker deserves to feel safe walking across the street, catching a bus, visiting a local business, or simply staying connected to their community. For older adults and people with disabilities, safe and accessible streets are not just a transportation issue. They are essential to maintaining independence, health, and quality of life.

AARP New York applauds Mayor Mamdani and city leaders for advancing a bold Vision Zero Action Plan that recognizes the unique needs and experiences of older New Yorkers and people with disabilities. We are pleased that the plan includes initiatives to make New York City safer for older adults, including exploring age-friendly street design improvements, strengthening relationships with older adult Vision Zero advocates, and supporting naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs) and other communities with large older adult populations through neighborhood-led safety initiatives. These efforts can help ensure older New Yorkers have a voice in shaping safer streets and public spaces.

As our population ages, it is more important than ever to design streets, intersections, sidewalks, and public spaces that prioritize safety, accessibility, and mobility for everyone.

We look forward to working with city agencies, advocates, and community leaders to help turn this vision into meaningful action and ensure New York City's streets are safer for people of all ages and abilities."
