Who Is Christine Stevens?

Christine Stevens is a board-certified music therapist (MSW, MT-BC), author of The Art and Heart of Drum Circles, and founder of UpBeat Drum Circles. She has spent decades leading transformative drumming experiences across the country and around the world, including keynotes, corporate wellness programs, and community events. Her work has been praised by Grammy-winning percussionist Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, who called her guidance into “the secret world of the rhythmic arts” truly magical.

Christine has a strong connection to Montana and the intermountain west, spending her summers near Yellowstone Park and hosting drum circles in Gardiner, MT. She has also partnered with AARP to lead drum circle sessions at large national AARP member events, further deepening her commitment to community wellness and engagement.

Through UpBeat Drum Circles, Christine blends the ancient power of rhythm with modern science to create healing experiences for people of all ages and abilities.

Why Drum Circles Are So Good for Your Brain (and the Rest of You!)

Drum circles aren’t just entertaining, they’re a genuine workout for your brain and body.

Research shows that group drumming:

  • Boosts brain plasticity — strengthening neural pathways and improving communication between the logical and creative sides of the brain.
  • Enhances memory and focus — by lighting up multiple areas of the brain at once.
  • Increases dopamine (the “feel-good” chemical) by 15–25%, helping elevate mood and reduce stress for up to two hours afterward.
  • Promotes emotional regulation, social bonding, and a sense of belonging — through synchronized rhythms that create oxytocin and empathy.
  • Reduces anxiety, depression, and burnout while building resilience, self-esteem, and overall well-being.

In short, drumming is brain magic that also feels like pure joy. Participants often leave sessions feeling lighter, happier, and more connected—both to themselves and to the group.

No Drum? No Problem -- Welcome to “Found Sound”!

One of the most creative and inclusive parts of Christine’s UpBeat Drum Circles is the concept of “found sound.” You truly don’t need a “real” drum. Christine encourages everyone to grab whatever is handy at home and turn it into an instrument:

  • Plastic ice cream pails
  • Pots, pans, and lids
  • Plasticware or wooden spoons
  • Empty containers, boxes, or even your own hands and voice

This playful approach makes drumming accessible to absolutely everyone—whether you live in a small apartment or simply want to keep things simple and fun. It’s all about creativity, not perfection. The beat is what matters, and everyone’s contribution adds to the magic!  Or make your own drum with Christine’s tips in this video.

Join from Anywhere—Virtual and Welcoming

These are virtual drum circles, so you can participate from your living room, kitchen table, or favorite cozy chair. All you need is a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access, plus your chosen “found sound” items. Christine will guide the entire group through easy-to-follow rhythms, call-and-response grooves, and even moments of mindful sound healing.  Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned rhythm lover, you’ll feel right at home. The sessions are designed to be inclusive, uplifting, and stress-free.
