With skyrocketing property values in Montana, comes skyrocketing property tax bills. AARP Montana wants to remind Montanans about several tax relief programs.

Montana Homestead Exemption Now Open for Applications

Great news for Montana homeowners and long-term rental property owners: Starting December 1, 2025, you can apply for the new Homestead Exemption, which will lower your property tax rate beginning in 2026.

Key points:

If you received the 2024 Montana property tax rebate on your primary residence, you’ve likely been automatically enrolled — no action needed unless you’ve sold the home or changed your primary address. The Department of Revenue (DOR) has mailed confirmation letters to those individuals.
Approximately 220,000–225,000 primary residences are already enrolled automatically.
If you didn’t get the rebate or want to double-check your status, visit the DOR website to confirm enrollment.
Owners of long-term rental properties must apply manually (DOR expects 50,000–60,000 applications covering ~115,000 units).
Deadline to apply for the 2026 tax year: March 1, 2026.

Montana Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit

Elderly Montana homeowners may qualify for a refundable tax credit up to $1,150 even if they do not have to file an income tax return.

Property Tax Assistance Program (PTAP)

Residential homeowners on a fixed or limited income may qualify for this program.

Qualifying applicants receive a reduced property tax rate reduction of 30, 50, or 80% on the first $350,000 of their home’s market value.

Eligibility for this program is based on home ownership, occupancy requirements, income levels, and marital status.

Montana Disabled Veterans (MDV) Property Tax Assistance Program

Montana veterans who are 100% disabled or the unmarried surviving spouses of deceased veterans who were 100% disabled may qualify for this program.

Qualifying applicants receive a reduced property tax rate reduction of 50, 70, 80, or 100% on their home’s market value.
Eligibility for this program is based on home ownership, occupancy requirements, military disability requirements, income levels, and marital status.

Land Value Property Tax Assistance for Residential Property

This program helps residential property owners if the value of their land is disproportionately higher than the value of their home or other buildings on their land and the land has been in their family for at least 30 years.
