Family caregivers are the backbone of Michigan’s long-term care system. Every day, they step in to help older loved ones remain safely at home by managing medications, providing transportation, preparing meals, offering emotional support and more. While this care is given out of love, it often comes at a significant cost.
AARP Michigan is urging the Michigan Legislature to establish tax relief for family caregivers who pay out-of-pocket expenses to care for an older relative. More than three in four family caregivers incur caregiving-related expenses, spending an average of $7,242 each year on essential needs like transportation, medical supplies, home modifications and respite care.
Michigan is home to more than 1.6 million family caregivers, many of whom balance care responsibilities with work and raising families of their own. For many, caregiving means reduced work hours, dipping into savings or taking on debt to make ends meet.
A caregiver tax credit would help recognize and offset these real costs, providing much-needed relief to families who are already stretched thin. AARP Michigan believes tax relief is a practical, commonsense step that can help caregivers continue providing care without jeopardizing their own stability.
A caregiver tax credit is not a handout. It’s a way to acknowledge the essential role caregivers play and to support them in continuing that role.
AARP Michigan is calling on lawmakers to act, but they need to hear from you. Raise your voice today by sending an email to your state legislators. By speaking up, you can help push for meaningful tax relief that recognizes the value of family caregivers and supports families across Michigan.
