One Volunteer, Thousands of Lives Touched: Susie Mize Receives AARP Kansas' Top Honor

For more than a decade, Susie Mize has helped Kansas families navigate tax season while building a stronger community through volunteer service. In recognition of her dedication, AARP Kansas has named her the recipient of the 2026 AARP Kansas Andrus Award for Community Service, the organization's highest state volunteer honor.

Mize serves as volunteer site coordinator for the K-State Olathe Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free tax preparation services for low- and moderate-income taxpayers. Over the past 10 tax seasons, she has helped expand the program's reach, growing both the volunteer team and the number of residents served.

More Ways to Benefit

Last year, volunteers at the site prepared 1,900 tax returns and helped taxpayers secure more than $2 million in refunds.

“Susie’s commitment to serving others has had a meaningful impact on thousands of Kansans,” said Glenda DuBoise, AARP Kansas State Director. “Her leadership, compassion and dedication to helping people achieve greater financial stability embody the spirit of the Andrus Award.”

After a 32-year career in the mortgage industry, Mize retired and began volunteering through the VITA program. What started as an opportunity to give back quickly became a passion.

“I was overwhelmed when I learned I had been selected for this prestigious award,” Mize said. “The assistance we provide, and the sincere gratitude of those we assist, keep me going back.”

Mize hopes her experience will inspire others to serve their communities.

“I would advise everyone who has the ability and time to dedicate it to volunteerism of some sort,” she said. “The appreciation of those you help is beyond rewarding.”

The AARP Kansas Andrus Award recognizes individuals whose volunteer service improves lives, strengthens communities and reflects AARP’s mission of empowering people to choose how they live as they age. Through her dedication to helping others achieve greater financial security, Susie Mize exemplifies the spirit of that mission.
