SNAP Benefits Are Changing May 1—Here’s What You Need to Know

Courtesy

Starting May 1, 2026, changes to federal SNAP rules may affect some people’s food assistance benefits. Under new requirements, certain SNAP customers could lose benefits if they are not meeting—or are not exempt from—updated work requirements.

If you or someone you know relies on SNAP, now is the time to take action. AARP is sharing trusted resources to help you understand what’s changing and what steps you can take to protect your benefits.

First: Check Whether You’re Impacted

Illinois residents can use a short online screener to see if the new rules apply to them and whether they may qualify for an exemption. The screener walks you through basic questions and helps clarify your next steps.

How to Meet the New Requirements

If you are affected and do not qualify for an exemption, there are several ways to meet the updated SNAP work requirements. These include:

  • Working
  • Volunteering
  • Participating in an approved training or education program

The Illinois Department of Human Services provides detailed information on eligible activities and programs that can help you stay compliant.
