Ouray County Joins the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities

The nationwide network aims to make communities more livable for people of all ages

AARP Colorado is proud to announce Ouray County’s enrollment in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities, a program dedicated to promoting livable communities for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

With this enrollment, the county becomes the latest community in Colorado to join the Network, following in the footsteps of nearly two dozen communities across, and including, the state. By joining the Network, Ouray County has committed to identifying and addressing the needs of its aging population, creating a more inclusive and accessible community.

“Joining the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities is an important step for Ouray County,” said Commissioner Michelle Nauer. “We recognize the importance of improving livability in the county, especially as Coloradans grapple with housing affordability, transportation, and access to services.”

“Ouray’s community is vibrant, active, and dealing with the challenges and opportunities that are both a part of aging,” Vicki Warner-Huggins, member of the Social Justice Committee of the Ridgway Ouray Community Council, said. “Joining the network provides us the chance to take stock of issues like mental health, health care access, and more.”

Enrollment in the Network requires communities to conduct an assessment of their age-friendliness, identify strategies for improvement, and implement those strategies over time. As part of this process, Ouray County will work to ensure that the voices of residents 50 and older are included throughout.

“We congratulate Ouray County on their enrollment in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities," said Sara Schueneman, AARP Colorado state director. “We look forward to supporting Ouray County as officials and stakeholders work to create a community that is even more livable and inclusive for people of all ages.”

With its enrollment, Ouray County proudly stands as a member of the nationwide Network. This step places it amongst an expansive network of communities, states, and a territory, all united in their commitment to age-friendly initiatives.
