Medicare Open Enrollment Is Here. Have You Reviewed Your Coverage for Next Year?

If you're one of the millions of Americans enrolled in Medicare, it's time to take a closer look at your health coverage for 2027.

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7, and while it's easy to assume your current plan will continue working for you next year, a few minutes spent reviewing your options now could save you money and help you avoid surprises later.

More Ways to Benefit

Don't Toss That Letter Aside

Each fall, Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plan members receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). It may not be the most exciting mail you'll receive, but it could be one of the most important.

Your ANOC explains any changes coming to your plan next year, including:

  • Monthly costs and deductibles
  • Copays and coinsurance
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies in your network
  • Covered services and benefits

Even if you've been happy with your plan, coverage and costs can change from year to year. Taking a few minutes to review those changes can help ensure your plan still meets your health needs and budget.

Remember: Doing Nothing Is Still a Decision

Many people are surprised to learn that if they don't make any changes during Open Enrollment, their current coverage will generally continue into 2027.

That may be the right choice for you. But it also means you'll automatically accept any changes outlined in your Annual Notice of Change. That's why it's worth reviewing your coverage before the December 7 deadline.

Need Help? You're Not Alone.

Medicare can be confusing, and there's nothing wrong with asking for help.

Be Careful of Pushy Sales Pitches

Unfortunately, Medicare Open Enrollment is also a busy season for scammers and aggressive marketing tactics.

Be cautious if someone:

  • Pressures you to make a quick decision
  • Claims Medicare is changing and you must act immediately
  • Offers free gifts or special benefits in exchange for personal information
  • Requests your Medicare number, Social Security number, or bank account information
  • Calls unexpectedly and claims to represent Medicare

Remember, a trustworthy source will give you time to review your options and make the decision that's right for you.

Take a Little Time Now for Peace of Mind Later

Open Enrollment only comes once a year. Reviewing your Annual Notice of Change, comparing plans, and asking questions if you're unsure can help you feel confident about your coverage for the year ahead.

AARP Alabama encourages Medicare beneficiaries to take advantage of the resources available, seek trusted advice when needed, and stay alert to scams. A little homework today can help protect your health and your wallet throughout 2027.
