With Alabama's General Election set for Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, now is the time to make sure you're ready to vote. AARP Alabama encourages all eligible voters to verify their voter registration, confirm their polling location, review voter ID requirements, and learn about absentee voting options well before Election Day. Official election information is available at AlabamaVotes.gov.

This year's election will give Alabamians the opportunity to choose leaders at every level of government. Voters will elect candidates for all statewide constitutional offices, one U.S. Senate seat, and all seven of Alabama's congressional districts.

Check Your Registration and Polling Place

Even if you've voted in previous elections, it's smart to verify that your voter registration information is up to date, particularly if you've moved or changed your name.

Important Election Dates

Voter Registration Deadline

Oct. 19, 2026
This is the deadline to register to vote or update your voter registration information for the Nov. 3 General Election.

Absentee Ballot Application Deadlines

Oct. 27, 2026: Deadline for absentee ballot applications received by mail.
Oct. 29, 2026: Deadline for absentee ballot applications submitted in person.

Voter ID Is Required

Alabama voters must present a valid photo ID before voting. The photo ID requirement applies to voters casting ballots in person, and absentee voters must also meet identification requirements as part of the absentee voting process. [sos.alabama.gov], [voteamerica.org]

Acceptable forms of photo ID include:

Alabama driver's license.
Alabama non-driver ID card.
U.S. passport.
Military ID.
Tribal ID.
Employee photo IDs issued by federal, state, county, or municipal government entities.
Student or employee photo IDs issued by Alabama colleges and universities.

Voters who do not have an acceptable photo ID may obtain a free voter photo ID through the state. For more information, visit AlabamaVotes.gov.

Who Can Vote Absentee?

Alabama does not offer traditional early voting. However, eligible voters may vote by absentee ballot if they meet one of the qualifying reasons established by state law. Common reasons include:

Being absent from your county on Election Day.
Having an illness or physical disability that prevents you from going to the polls.
Working a shift of 10 hours or more that overlaps polling hours.
Serving as an election official or poll watcher outside your regular polling place.
Other circumstances authorized under Alabama law.

How to Vote by Absentee Ballot

If you are eligible to vote absentee:

Obtain an absentee ballot application from AlabamaVotes.gov.
Complete and submit the application to your county absentee election manager before the applicable deadline.
After receiving your ballot, carefully follow all instructions and provide any required identification documentation.
Return your completed ballot by mail or in person before the deadlines listed above.
