At AARP Alabama, we believe that voting is one of the most powerful ways to make your voice heard—no matter your age. On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Alabamians have an important opportunity to participate in a special election that will help shape representation at both the state and federal levels.

Here’s what you need to know—and how you can take part.

More Ways to Benefit...

Why Is There an Election on August 11?

The August 11 election is a special primary election for several congressional districts and a small number of state legislative seats.

This election is being held following changes to Alabama’s congressional district boundaries, a process known as redistricting. Redistricting happens periodically to reflect population changes and ensure districts are aligned with legal and constitutional requirements.

In 2026, court decisions and subsequent actions by Alabama state leaders led to the adoption of an updated congressional map. As a result, earlier primary results in certain districts were set aside, and a new primary election was scheduled so voters can choose party nominees under the updated district lines.

These August primaries will determine which candidates move forward to the November 3, 2026 general election.

Who Should Vote on August 11?

If you live in Congressional Districts 1, 2, 6, or 7 -- which include large portions of south and central Alabama, including areas around Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Dothan, and the Black Belt -- you may have a special primary election on your ballot.

Even if you voted earlier this year, you may need to vote again for these specific races, because the previous results were voided and must be conducted again under the updated district map.

How to Check Your Voter Registration

Before heading to the polls, confirm that your voter registration is current. Alabama makes this easy to do on the Secretary of State’s web site: www.alabamavotes.gov.

  • Visit the Alabama Secretary of State’s voter portal to:
    • Confirm your registration status
    • View your assigned districts
    • Check your polling place
  • If you are not registered, or need to update your information, you can:
    • Register online
    • Download and mail a registration form
    • Request a form by mail

Keep in mind: The deadline to register or update your registration is 15 days before an election.

Find Your Polling Location

Your polling place may have changed due to the updated district lines, so it’s important to double-check before Election Day.

You can find your polling location by:

  1. Visiting the state’s voter lookup tool
  2. Entering your name or address
  3. Viewing your assigned polling place and election details

This tool will also confirm which districts and races apply to you—especially important during a redistricting year.

What to Bring to the Polls

When voting in person in Alabama:

  • You must bring a valid photo ID
  • Polls are typically open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day

Why Your Vote Matters

Elections like the August 11 special primary may not always receive as much attention, but they are critically important. These races determine the candidates who will appear on the general election ballot in November and ultimately represent Alabama communities in Washington and Montgomery.

For older adults and families alike, decisions made by elected officials can affect issues such as:

  • Social Security and Medicare
  • Caregiving support
  • Prescription drug costs
  • Community services and infrastructure

Your participation helps ensure that your priorities and experiences are reflected in public decision-making.

Make a Plan to Vote

Taking a few minutes now can make all the difference:

✅ Confirm your registration at www.alabamavotes.gov
✅ Review your updated district information
