AARP Hearing Center
A recent AARP survey reveals that adults 50 and older place high importance on living a purposeful life, with key aspects including a sense of accomplishment, helping others and personal growth. The study underscores the essential elements that foster a sense of purpose and satisfaction in everyday activities. Despite facing barriers such as financial constraints and other responsibilities, a significant majority express interest in learning how to create and maintain purpose in their lives.
Living a Purposeful Life is Important
The survey reveals that a significant majority of respondents place high importance on various aspects of living a purposeful life. Specifically, eight in 10 (79%) say having a clear sense of purpose is very important.
Similarly, most older adults say the following are very important:
- Feeling a sense of accomplishment in my daily life (77%)
- Doing things that help others (70%)
- Feeling grounded and fulfilled (68%)
- Engaging in opportunities for personal growth (62%)
Possible Barriers to Engaging in Meaningful Activities
While living a purposeful life is crucial for older adults, many (77%) say they face at least one barrier that hinders their engagement in meaningful activities. Financial constraints (28%) and other responsibilities (27%) are the primary factors cited as obstacles.
Interest in Learning About Purpose
Despite possible barriers, a sizable majority (77%) of older adults express interest in learning how to create and maintain purpose in their lives.
