WASHINGTON—AARP today announced Annette Franqui as its first Hispanic to lead the Board of Directors as Chair. Franqui will serve a two-year term as Chair concluding in June 2022. The Board of Directors is the governing body of AARP and provides strategic direction, sets policy, and provides governance oversight for AARP.
Franqui is a senior financial services executive with prior chief financial officer (CFO) experience. Since joining the Board of Directors in 2014, she has played a key role overseeing AARP’s financial health through service on the board’s Audit and Finance Committee. A native of Puerto Rico, Franqui serves on the boards of several companies including Arcos Dorados, the largest operator of McDonald’s restaurants in Latin America and the Caribbean, and its largest franchisee. She brings personal caregiving experience to AARP, one of the organization’s top priorities.
As Chair, Franqui will serve as the presiding official of the Board of Directors as it directs the affairs and funds of AARP. The Board Chair also serves as chair of the Governance and Compensation Committees.
“Serving as AARP Board Chair is a great responsibility and opportunity,” Franqui said. “This role becomes even more important at a time when the pandemic has had such a destructive impact on so many older Americans and their families. AARP is a strong advocate and a trusted source of information as we combat health disparities, support financial security, build age-friendly communities, promote diversity, and connect people to resources and to each other at this time of extraordinary social isolation.
“As someone whose family has felt the impact when a loved one experiences dementia, I understand on a deeply personal level the importance of AARP’s leadership in that area. AARP is investing in research and development of breakthrough treatments for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and providing information, support, and advocacy on behalf of America’s more than 50 million family caregivers.
“I hope that through my service as Board Chair, people across the U.S. will become better acquainted with AARP’s work in caregiving, health care, financial security, and personal fulfillment.”
