Trader Joe’s is paying $7.4 million as part of a lawsuit settlement, with the funds going to shoppers who used a credit or debit card at certain locations in early 2019. The deadline to claim your share is June 9.

The case arose from allegations that some Trader Joe’s receipts displayed the first six and last four digits of a customer’s card number. Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, or FACTA, businesses are barred from printing more than the last five digits on a receipt. Plaintiff Brian Keim alleged the extra digits increased the risk of identity theft if a receipt was lost or discarded.

Trader Joe’s denies the allegations and denies wrongdoing. The company says not every store issued receipts in that format and that, where they were printed, only a small minority of transactions were affected. No identity theft has been reported to Trader Joe’s based on the conduct alleged. The settlement notice says identity theft is not required to submit a claim.

Who qualifies

The settlement covers account holders whose credit or debit card was used at a Trader Joe’s store between March 5 and July 19, 2019, where the receipt displayed the first six and last four digits of the card number. You will receive either an email or a postcard notifying you that you are eligible.

Go to tj-factasettlement.com or call 1-888-444-7415. Shoppers with a Class ID can also submit a claim by mail to: Keim v. Trader Joe's Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 301134, Los Angeles, CA 90030-1134. The deadline for all claims is June 9, 2026.

What you may receive

The estimated per-person payment is $102.45, but this figure is not guaranteed. Payments will be made on a pro rata basis after attorneys’ fees, administrative costs and a proposed $10,000 service award to Keim are deducted from the settlement fund.

Also note that there is a scheduled hearing on August 10, 2026, to decide whether the settlement will be approved, and even if it is, there may be numerous appeals.

And while the $7.4 million number may look (and sound) eye-watering, note that the court may approve up to one-third of that amount to be deducted to pay legal fees and expenses.

What happens if you do nothing

Shoppers who miss the June 9 deadline receive no payment and give up the right to pursue any released claims against Trader Joe’s related to this matter. The only way to preserve that right is to formally opt out of the settlement, also by June 9.

The settlement still requires court approval before any funds are released. A fairness hearing is scheduled for August 10, 2026. USA Today reported that checks would be issued within 10 business days of final approval, assuming no appeals, and can be cashed for up to 180 days from the issue date.
