As the summer starts to wind down, many retailers are looking to unload warm-weather products such as patio furniture, grills and sandals. That means bargain hunters can not only score deals on summer-related items in August but also have a few more weeks to use their purchases.
Shoppers in states with sales-tax holidays in August could snag additional savings in certain categories.
Early Labor Day sales kick off in the middle of the month, since the holiday falls early this year, on Monday, Sept. 1. “We usually see those Labor Day holiday sales roll out a couple of weeks before the holiday itself, so that means that by mid-August, we can start seeing some overlap between the back-to-school sales and some early Labor Day sales,” says Julie Ramhold, a senior staff writer and consumer analyst at DealNews.
Generally, prices for summer items on end-of-season clearance continue to fall in September. However, the selection will dwindle, so if you wait too long, you could lose out.
Here is a list of products that will go on sale in August.
Indoor and outdoor furniture
While all types of furniture will be on sale this month, you’ll see the biggest markdowns on outdoor furniture as the temperature cools. Some of the best deals will be over Labor Day weekend.
For both indoor and outdoor furniture, you may find even lower prices if you’re buying multiple pieces or an entire set.
Pro tip: “As always, consider the delivery and assembly costs when comparing furniture,” says Jennifer Litwin, author of Best Furniture Buying Tips Ever! “The largest retailers typically offer the best discounts.”
Where to find deals: Macy’s, Ashley Furniture, Sam’s Club
Potential savings: Up to 70 percent off patio furniture; up to 20 percent off indoor furniture
Lawn and garden equipment
Home-improvement retailers are eager to sell lawn mowers and other outdoor equipment in August to clear their shelves for leaf blowers and other fall tools that consumers begin shopping for next month.
“Once we get into September, nobody is buying [lawn] mowers,” says Brad Godwin, senior vice president of sales and partnerships at Breaktime Media, a shopper-engagement tool retailers use. Stores “don’t want to be stuck with them. Then they have to store them somewhere for next year, and that costs them money.”
Where to find deals: eBay, Lowes, local garden centers
Potential savings: 40 to 50 percent off
Grills
Many retailers slash prices on grills during Labor Day sales, since there’s less demand for them in the fall. If you spot a grill that you want in a store, see if the retailer will sell you the floor model at an additional discount. With the grilling season coming to a close, retailers may be more open to such a deal, Godwin says.
Where to find deals: Costco, Weber, Wayfair
Potential savings: Up to 60 percent off
