If you need more time to finish your tax return, it’s easy to request an extension. The Internal Revenue Service will automatically grant you an extension to file your tax return by Oct. 15 — all you need to do is submit a request. You can file for an extension electronically or print out Form 4868 and mail it to the address listed on the form. Just make sure it’s postmarked by April 15.
