En español | Many Americans have embraced a new Thanksgiving tradition in recent years: hightailing it out after the big feed as big stores advanced their Black Friday sales into Turkey Day evening, or even afternoon.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put a stop to that, at least temporarily, for many. Since July, one big chain after another has announced that, in the interest of staff and shopper safety, their stores will go quiet on Thanksgiving Day. (We're talking about department and specialty stores, big boxes and warehouse clubs — major supermarkets and drug stores will by and large be open, albeit in some cases with reduced hours.)

"Let's face it,” Target said in a statement on its holiday plans. “Historically, deal hunting and holiday shopping can mean crowded events, and this isn't a year for crowds."

To avert the frenzied aisle scrums that have come to typify shopping on Black Friday (which this year falls on Nov. 27), major retailers are spreading out the savings, offering doorbuster-style discounts throughout the holiday season. They are emphasizing online browsing and expanding options for contactless payment and pickup. (Holiday deals site said that rather than doorbusters, this could be the year of the “curb buster” deal.)

Here's how some of the biggest retailers are refashioning the holiday shopping extravaganza. Check back regularly for additional stores and sale dates through Thanksgiving.
