Carriers with special offers for the military community

USAA

USAA was founded by Army officers in 1922 and continues to serve only the military community. While the organization doesn’t offer a specific discount on home or auto insurance for veterans, it does provide excellent rates for members.

The company boasts that most people who switch to USAA from other carriers save an average of $725 on their annual auto insurance premiums. Additionally, if your parents were in the military and have a USAA auto insurance policy, you might qualify to save up to 10 percent on your own policy.

Farmers

While Farmers Insurance was founded by and for farmers in 1928, the organization has grown into a nationwide provider that covers people of all stripes. Nowadays, they give a special nod to the military community, offering discounts on auto insurance to active duty, reserves and veterans.

The company states that it saves customers who switch to Farmers auto insurance coverage from other companies an average of $413. It also offers discounts for those who bundle home and auto insurance. That being said, U.S. News & World Report puts Farmers in the sixth spot on its list of best auto insurance due to its relatively high premiums.

GEICO

Established in 1936, GEICO was originally called the Government Employees Insurance Company and targeted federal employees and certain categories of servicemembers . The company retains that commitment to supporting the military, currently offering discounts of up to 15 percent on insurance for active-duty service members, retired military members, and members of the National Guard or Reserves.

The company also offers an unspecified discount on car insurance to members of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), Armed Forces Benefit Association (AFBA), and Navy League of the United States (NLUS). U.S. News & World Report places GEICO in the number four spot, tied with Nationwide, on its list of best auto insurance carriers due to its low rates, good customer service, and broad collection of discounts.

Carriers which offer good services and rates

American Family

American Family started in 1927 as Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and adopted its current name in 1963. It has no special relationship to the military, but the company maintains a Veteran and Military Business Resource Group.

The company shines in its claims handling. U.S. News & World Report ranks it the second-best auto insurance carrier because of its high customer service and customer satisfaction scores. Forbes Advisor lists it as being one of the lowest-cost homeowners insurance options among major carriers. American Family claims that bundling home and auto insurance through the company can save you up to 23 percent on both policies together.

Nationwide

Nationwide was founded in 1926 as Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, changing its name in 1955 as it expanded. The company employs thousands of veterans, offers expanded benefits to those actively serving, and maintains a Military Associate Resource Group to support its military-connected employees.

While Nationwide doesn’t offer particular discounts or deals to vets, Forbes Advisor lists the company as among the most affordable for home insurance, and U.S. News & World Report lists its auto insurance in the top four due to excellent customer service and claims handling. The company says that its customers can save an average of $646 when they bundle their home and auto insurance.

State Farm

When founded in 1922, State Farm aimed to provide low-cost automobile insurance to farmers in the state of Illinois. It has since expanded nationwide to become one of the most prominent national insurance carriers.

While State Farm doesn’t provide dedicated discounts to veterans, it tends to have affordable plans. In fact, U.S. News & World Report lists State Farm in the number three slot on its list of best car insurance carriers because its premiums tend to be below the national average, as well as the fact that its customers give it high marks for service.

According to Forbes Advisor, State Farm’s homeowners insurance premiums are among the lowest. State Farm advertises that you can save up to $1,073 by bundling auto and homeowners insurance.
