Trifecta Meal Delivery Review: Is It Right for You?

Testers said this company offered on-time delivery and options for special diets, but it fell short on two key measures

These days, you can find protein added to everything from coffee to cake. More people are adopting high-protein diets to help maintain muscle mass, improve bone density or lose weight. And some people are using meal delivery services — which ship meals directly to your door — to take the guesswork out of these diets.

Trifecta is a wellness-minded meal delivery service that offers keto, protein-build and paleo filters, all of which are high in protein. The meals are pre-cooked, single-portion dishes you heat up in the microwave. Services with high-protein options like this one could be an option for some older adults, since our muscle mass and strength decline with age. Note: You may want to check in with your health care provider before starting a high-protein diet, as excessive protein can be harmful if you have certain underlying health conditions, such as kidney disease.

More Ways to Benefit

Trifecta also emphasizes clean eating: The company says it uses antibiotic- and hormone-free meat, poultry and fish, and it bans 237 questionable ingredients from its meals. But note that these meals are pricey, starting around $16 per meal, with box shipments coming with seven, 10 or 14 single-serve meals. You get to choose the number of meals you get in a box. This meal delivery service, like others, requires a subscription, meaning you’d select a plan size for how many meals you’d like each week, and that plan would start a recurring charge for that selection. You would then have the flexibility to choose your dishes before each delivery round.

But you have a variety of options when it comes to meal delivery services, and it may be hard to know which one is a fit for you. To assess this meal delivery service, the AARP Smart Picks team worked with a group of testers ages 50 and older, including members of AARP’s The Ethel community. The Ethel is a free weekly newsletter, website and online community that’s named in honor of AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus. To gather more insight into the subject, we also conducted a survey in April 2026 of 300 adults ages 50 and older who were currently using a meal delivery service or had used one in the last 12 months.

Our testers said Trifecta’s meals were delivered seamlessly and offered food for many different diets, but the taste was average and portion sizes were small. Could this offering be right for you? Read on to learn exactly how the delivery service performed in our testing, and whether it could fit well with your daily needs and schedule.

What to know about Trifecta

In our testing, this service stood out in a few key areas: on-time delivery, range of dietary options and ease of preparation.

Testers reported that the delivery of their orders was seamless, which isn’t always the case with meal delivery services. We’ve tested more than 15 services, and about one-third of the deliveries were delayed by at least one day. But all Trifecta deliveries arrived on time and fresh. Testers also noted their boxes weren’t damaged and their packaged food was still cold, which is important from a food safety perspective.

We also appreciate the company’s range of meal plans, which include options for keto, vegetarian and paleo diets. But the menu within each dietary filter could be more extensive.

Another plus? Testers said these meals were easy to prepare, since they just needed to be heated in the microwave.

Key takeaways from our testing

Our testers gave Trifecta a perfect score for meal customization. This company lets you swap out proteins, at no additional cost, depending on the protein, and build meal plans for a variety of dietary restrictions and preferences, including paleo, keto, vegan, vegetarian, everyday healthy, weight-loss and protein-focused. Our lab testers said they appreciated having so many dietary filters to choose from, though they longed for more meal choices. “In each dietary category, there were only about 10 meals each,” one lab tester said, noting that the company does update the plans each week with new options. And although testers said reheating instructions on some meals were a bit hard to read, likely due to condensation from the box’s ice pack dripping and smearing the ink on the label instructions, they said this service’s prepared meals were easy to reheat. For instance, Doreen, a 55-year-old tester, tried the turkey meatballs with cheese ravioli and dijon mustard pork. She gave both dishes very good ratings for ease of preparation. “All I had to do was remove the film and pop [them] in the microwave,” she said.

In our testing, the meals arrived chilled and packaged with plenty of cooling packs. "Nothing was damaged or even lukewarm from sitting on my covered porch all day," one of our lab testers reported. The meals were also delivered on time. Trifecta provided more delivery updates than other companies we’ve reviewed. Most companies we’ve tested send a confirmation email after you select your meals, but don’t send shipment-tracking information until the day of delivery. But lab testers said Trifecta provided tracking information several days before the delivery date. For older adults who rely on delivered single-serving meals as a primary food source, on-time and trackable delivery is important.

Despite its pros, Trifecta earned a middling score for taste  — earning the lowest taste rating of any meal delivery service we’ve assessed. Tester Doreen reported her dijon mustard pork had mushy, bland vegetables and meat that was “a bit chewy and dry.” The turkey meatballs with ravioli didn’t fare much better. “I don’t think the sauce tastes like marinara, more like just a tomato paste,” she said. Testers also said the portions were small. Another drawback? The service starts at around $16 per meal for dinner, and you can order seven, 10 or 14 single-serving meals per weekly shipment. That makes Trifecta one of the more expensive meal delivery services we’ve tested. For example, Factor, the best overall pick in our list of the best meal delivery services, usually costs between $11.49 and $15.99 per serving for its prepared meals. If you want a prepared meal with more flavor, you may consider Factor, which earned almost-perfect taste scores from testers.

How we tested and reviewed meal delivery services

To identify the strengths and weaknesses of each meal delivery service, we recruited a group of nine testers ages 50-plus — including members from AARP’s The Ethel community — to test the services and share their unbiased feedback. Testers ordered and cooked their meals in their homes or in our AARP Smart Picks test kitchen and shared their thoughts on key factors such as food quality, portion size, taste, customization options and ease of preparation.

In addition, we paid close attention to the delivery process, including the number of delivery updates the company provided and the quality of the packaging. We also reviewed the cancellation process for each service to determine how long it takes and whether any challenges arise before pausing or ending your subscription.

How much does Trifecta cost?

As noted, Trifecta’s standard price per serving for dinner starts at around $16, putting it on the higher end of meal services we’ve tested. You can order seven, 10 or 14 single-serving meals per week, and the company has a $99 order minimum. Each delivery also has a flat shipping rate of $9.99 per box (about $1 to $2 less than other services we’ve tested), which puts a minimum order at about $122, including shipping.

If you order from Trifecta, your total cost depends on the number of meals you choose and any customizations that incur additional costs, such as premium ingredient swaps. You can see a breakdown of some of these costs in the chart below.

In general, a meal delivery service can help older adults focus on a weekly meal plan tailored to their specific health concerns and take the guesswork out of what to eat, says Nadine Hassan, DCN, a doctor of clinical nutrition and professor of nutrition at Purdue Global in West Lafayette, Indiana.

If you’re wondering whether Trifecta could be a fit for you, you may want to ask yourself the following questions.

Do I have special dietary needs or goals?

If you want ready-made meals that work with diets such as keto or paleo, Trifecta could make sense for you. This company offers meal plans for eight different diets. Most other meal services we’ve tested offer about four to six.

Trifecta also includes many high-protein meals, which can be beneficial for maintaining muscle mass and strength as we age, according to experts. “Older adults are in need of more protein than younger adults,” Hassan says. “Some meal delivery services may have modest portions of protein to keep the cost more effective for the consumer. Being mindful about the amount of protein being consumed on a daily basis can help with creating a balanced meal plan.” When our team contacted customer service, this company’s representative noted that the average amount of protein per meal with this service was around 35 grams. Generally, experts recommend at least 25 grams of protein per meal for a high-protein diet. Before exploring this type of diet, or any others, be sure to check with your health care provider.

Am I cooking for one and hoping to reduce food waste?

If you’re looking for a meal plan that delivers single-serving prepared meals, Trifecta may be a fit. Each meal in its weekly delivery is portioned for one person.

Some older adults who live alone may find it challenging to cook for one, says Avery Zenker, a registered dietitian in Kitchener, Canada. “Meal delivery services can provide peace of mind that a healthy meal will be available even on the most difficult days.”

Trifecta’s single-serving portions can also help cut down on food waste, reduce the amount of tired leftovers in your fridge and offer quick meals for those days when you don’t feel like cooking.

Is taste the most important factor to me?

If you're looking for exciting flavors, Trifecta may not be the best choice. While its meals tended to be lower in calories than those from other meal delivery services we’ve tested, they earned only passable taste scores. For older adults looking to boost their protein intake or cut back on carbs while saving time, Trifecta may fill a need. But if you’re looking for well-flavored prepared meals, you may prefer a different meal delivery service, such as Factor or HelloFresh, which both received almost-perfect taste scores from our testers.

FAQs

Are all Trifecta meals pre-cooked?

Yes. Unlike services that offer meal kits, which include individual ingredients you must prepare and cook to make a meal, or meal kits alongside prepared meals, all Trifecta meals are pre-cooked and are delivered chilled in a box to your door. After you unpack and refrigerate your meals, just take them out and reheat them in the microwave, oven or air fryer when you’re ready. In general, the meals are adequately reheated in the microwave in under 2 minutes, no cooking required.

How long do Trifecta meals last after delivery?

After delivery, chilled meals should be refrigerated, according to the company. The service also recommends that consumers eat refrigerated meals within seven days of delivery. If you’d prefer to preserve Trifecta meals for later, the company says they can last up to three months in the freezer after delivery.

What is Trifecta’s cancellation policy?

Trifecta requires at least seven days’ notice to cancel your account. You can cancel your plan at any time by contacting customer service. During our assessment, one of our lab testers was able to cancel their account by heading to their account information page on the company’s website and choosing “contact us to cancel.” The site provided three ways to contact customer service — chat, email or phone — and our tester chose chat. This selection opened a chat window with a company representative, who confirmed the account was closed and provided a confirmation number.
