Want to use a meal delivery service but worry the food might be too expensive? You’re not the only one: In our April 2026 survey of 300 adults ages 50 and older who currently use or have used a meal delivery service in the last 12 months, respondents said the hardest part of choosing a service was “finding one within my budget.” The good news is that it is possible to enjoy this convenience without breaking the bank.

Meal services can be especially helpful for older adults, says Andrea M. Barnes, DBH, registered dietitian and fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in Germansville, Pennsylvania. One of the biggest benefits is that they may make it easier to eat healthier on a regular basis. “Older adults may find it hard to prepare balanced meals every day, which can increase the risk of inadequate protein intake, poor dietary quality and unintended weight loss,” she says.

More Ways to Benefit

Beyond that, these services can be a fun way to expand your menus, as we confirmed during our April 2026 focus group of people ages 67 to 77 who are part of AARP’s The Ethel community. The Ethel is a free weekly newsletter, website and online community that’s named in honor of AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus. Our participants said they use meal delivery services to get out of a recipe rut and try new meals

So how do these offerings work? There are two common classifications of meal delivery services: meal kits and prepared meals. With meal kits, fresh ingredients arrive on your doorstep in a box with recipe cards that walk you through how to prepare meals step by step. Meanwhile, prepared meals are just that: They arrive on your doorstep chilled or frozen, and they only require reheating. This simple reheating may especially appeal to older adults who don’t want to cook regularly or people who have difficulty chopping or standing for long periods.

These offerings can vary in price depending on the company and the type of service. So to help you find the most budget-friendly meal delivery service, the AARP Smart Picks team worked with a group of testers ages 50 and older to assess 15 services on key factors such as prep time, quality of instructions and the shipping process. Some testers prepared their food at home, while others did so in our AARP Smart Picks Test Kitchen.

Based on our testing, we found that the most affordable meal delivery services offer prices per dinner serving at $12 or less, generous portions and multiple options to customize meals. Read on to learn which services performed best in our testing — and see if one might be right for you.

How we defined the “cheapest” meal delivery service

It’s hard to compare prices between meal delivery services because prices vary by company, any customizations you make and the number or type of meals you choose. To ensure apples-to-apples comparisons, we used the starting price per dinner serving as our benchmark. Additionally, we factored in other features that may help you save money, such as family plans that have lower per-serving prices. Generally, services are on this list if they offer meals for $12 or less per serving.

Cons

Lowest starting price per serving for dinner: $6.99 for the two- and four-serving plans

Plan options: Three to five meals for two, four or six people

 Vegetarian friendly: Yes

 Vegan friendly: No

Sample of other diets available: Mediterranean, Protein-smart, calorie-smart and carb-smart

Key takeaways from our testing

EveryPlate offers meal kits in which you receive individual ingredients to prepare and cook yourself. This service was among the most affordable offerings we tested, at a starting price of $6.99 per dinner serving. However, Home Chef’s lower starting price is for its family plan — its standard plan starts at $9.99. Meanwhile, the average starting price for dinner servings among services on this list is $9.40 per serving, which is $2.41 higher than this company’s cost. Another pricing note: EveryPlate says first-time customers can get meals for as little as $2.99 per box with special discounts. Like other services, this one offers customizations and add-ons that drive up the cost, so the exact price you pay depends on the number and types of meals you choose. In addition, testers said these meals are easy to prepare. For example, Will, a 65-year-old tester, said the chicken for his one-pan chicken and pepper quesadilla came pre-diced, which saved time. And Donna, a 60-year-old tester, noted her creamy zucchini penne was simple to make. “The longest part was just boiling the pasta,” she said. “After that, you just throw everything together.”

Both Will and Donna gave this meal delivery service a top-notch score for portion size. Will said his quesadillas were filling and had plenty of chicken, peppers and cheese. “I was pleasantly surprised with how much food it was,” he said. “Definitely enough for two people.” Donna reported her creamy zucchini penne with garlicky panko was plenty for at least two people. (Both meals were noted to have two servings.)

When tester Will opened his box, he found all the ingredients in a single bag, rather than individually packaged by meal. He said it took “a bit of work” to separate the ingredients into the four meals. This extra step takes extra time and can even lead to mistakes if you’re not sure how to match up ingredients with recipe cards, so you may consider it a downside. Meanwhile, other meal delivery services we tested, such as Home Chef, put all ingredients for each meal in separate bags to make them easier to organize. Donna also said she wished her flavor packets were easier to open. EveryPlate packages don’t have pull tabs or other features that make them easier to grip and tear open, which may be a concern for some older adults with limited dexterity or arthritis in the hands or wrists.

Key takeaways from our testing

Home Chef is a meal delivery service offering a range of options for you to choose from. Its family plan is one of the most affordable options we tested, starting at $6.99 per dinner serving. But it earned our best value distinction because, unlike EveryPlate, this service lets you choose from two plans: a standard or family plan. Its family plan offers more budget-friendly recipes that could be easier to make, like taco kits or one-pan pasta dishes. We tested the standard plan, which offers meals that start in increments of two servings rather than four. The standard plan starts at $9.99 per dinner serving. Another plus? This company offers meal kits — like EveryPlate — as well as other types of meals, including express (made in less than 30 minutes), oven-ready, chopped-and-ready and heat-and-eat meals. Oven-ready meals are pre-portioned dishes that arrive in an oven-safe tray. All you have to do is place them in the oven to cook. Meals that fall into the chopped-and-ready category arrive with pre-portioned and chopped ingredients that you then cook. This may be beneficial for older adults with limited dexterity or who prefer not to chop ingredients.

Testers gave this service near-perfect ratings for ease of preparation. Peggy, a 67-year-old Ethel tester, cooked two Home Chef meals — trout with roasted garlic herb sauce and speedy peach-glazed pork chops — and said both were easy to prepare because the recipe cards were clear and included helpful photos. Tester Donna said she appreciated that all her ingredients came in separate packages because it made everything feel “fresh.” Not everyone liked opening many individual bags, though: Tester Will said he found it tedious. One thing all testers agreed on was the ample portions, which they said were perfect for two people. This service earned a near-top-level score on this metric.

Testers were split on Home Chef’s flavor. Will gave this service a passable taste score, while Donna and Peggy said it tasted “good” and gave it an above-average score. That said, Donna and Peggy differed on perceptions of their meals’ seasoning. Donna said her parmesan lemon chicken could have used more salt. Meanwhile, Peggy said her speedy peach-glazed pork chop meal tasted too salty and that she would have liked to know the salt content of its spice packet. Sodium levels could be a key consideration in evaluating a meal kit, so you may want to look more closely into this detail when deciding on a service. Taste wasn’t the only assessment our testers differed on. Peggy’s recipe card indicated that the prep time for her pork chop meal would be 35 minutes, but she reported it took nearly twice that time to cook. She attributed this time difference to her need to de-stem the packaged green beans and cut tomatoes. But Will and Donna didn’t report any extra prep time for their meals. If taste and time in the kitchen are the most important factors for you when choosing a meal delivery service, you may prefer HelloFresh, which earned higher overall taste scores in our assessment and shared reliable prep time estimates.

Best for Customizations: HelloFresh

AARP Smart Picks

Pros

 Large recipe catalog allows customizations

 Easy-to-follow instructions

 Accurate estimates for cook times

Cons

 May experience shipping delays

Some produce may not be ripe

 Type: Meal kit

Lowest starting price per serving for dinner: $10.99

Plan options: Two to six recipes per week with two to four servings each

 Vegetarian friendly: Yes

 Vegan friendly: Yes

Key takeaways from our testing

HelloFresh, a meal kit delivery service known for delivering fresh ingredients, offers more than 2,500 recipes. This company earned a top-tier score for customization because it allows you to swap proteins, request extra protein and even change out your side for some meals. While many meal delivery services allow you to switch your protein selection, HelloFresh is one of the few we’ve tested that lets you swap the side on some meals. This ability may be worth considering if you have strong preferences for vegetable pairings or grains and want more flexibility in selecting your meals. For example, during our assessment, Annie, a 62-year-old tester, swapped out the protein and sides in her garlicky shrimp couscous bowl when making her meal selection. You can’t personalize every meal, though, and not every aspect of the meal is customizable. For example, you can’t change the sauce or seasoning.

Annie said the instructions for her chicken and Greek salad pita pockets recipe were easy to follow and the large pictures clearly displayed how chopped items should look, which helped her follow the recipe. Another plus: the estimated 25-minute cook time was accurate. Some services we tested didn’t supply reliable cooking times. Home Chef, for instance, took nearly 30 minutes longer than estimated for one tester’s meal. Accurate cooking times can be an important factor for older adults who like to know how long they’ll be in the kitchen or people who need to plan their meals around potential physical limitations, such as difficulty standing for long periods or chopping ingredients.

While HelloFresh is a service with some of the highest overall scores across our tests, one tester’s delivery experience knocked the company down a few points. With this service, you can select a delivery day, but you can't choose a time frame; your kit will generally arrive between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tester Annie said her HelloFresh meal kit arrived a day later than she expected. If you’re often out of the house or travel a lot, this potential shipping delay may be worth considering. Another knock? Annie said the tomato in her kit wasn’t ripe, so she had to swap it for cherry tomatoes she had on hand.

Key takeaways from our testing

Factor is a meal delivery service that offers prepared meals you pop in the microwave or oven before serving. These meals are chilled rather than frozen, which may preserve their freshness and make them easier to reheat. All our testers found the reheating process simple, as it only required them to poke holes in the plastic before microwaving. Donna said the two-minute stated cook time was enough to heat her Thai yellow curry chicken meal all the way through. The convenience of this service may be a benefit for busy older adults or people who aren’t interested in cooking but still want to vary their meals.

This company’s prepared meals earned an almost-perfect score on average for taste. Tester Donna said she was initially skeptical about Factor because her meal was chilled, so she worried it wouldn’t be fresh. But she said her yellow curry dish surprised her. “It tasted as if it had been made that day,” she said. In addition, Lynn, a 72-year-old tester from The Ethel community, tried three meals from this service — including a roasted garlic chicken — and said the vegetables were cooked perfectly, the chicken was “delicious,” and the meals had generous amounts of sauce. Our testers also awarded this service a perfect score for portion size. Each prepared meal from this company is intended as a single serving, which may be a benefit for single older adults or those who don’t want to worry about splitting food or dealing with leftovers.

While Factor earned one of the highest overall scores, it’s more expensive than other services on this list. The starting price is $11.49 per serving, which is one pre-packaged meal. That’s slightly more than the average for this list, which is $9.40 for a dinner serving. Still, its price per serving is below $12, which is relatively reasonable and makes it eligible to be one of our most affordable meal delivery services. Another strike? This service lacks low-sodium meals. To put its sodium content into perspective, the spiced chickpea chaat salad that Will prepared had 900 milligrams of sodium, more than half the optimal daily sodium limit of 1,500 milligrams per the American Heart Association. If you’re interested in a meal delivery service but prefer lower-sodium options, you may want to consider a company with a dedicated low-sodium meal plan, such as Green Chef.

Best for Singles: Tempo

Pros

Regular email updates about order status

Cons

Lacks meals for vegetarians and vegans

 Instructions are difficult to read

 Type: Prepared meals

Lowest starting price per serving for dinner:$10.98

Plan options: six, eight, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 or 20 meals per week (one serving each)

Key takeaways from our testing

Tempo is a prepared meal service that offers single-portion meals, which may be a good choice for single older adults who don’t want to worry about leftovers. Doreen, a 55-year-old tester, gave the service a perfect score for its portions, praising the “impressive” size of her cracked-peppercorn gravy chicken dish. “If I were served this at a restaurant, I wouldn’t feel like I’m getting ripped off,” she said. Doreen also gave this service a near-perfect score for taste. She said her spinach-and-artichoke sausage pasta was balanced, with no ingredient overpowering the others. And she noted her chicken was “juicy” and the cheddar broccoli rice with it was “full of flavor.”

AARP Smart Picks

Many meal delivery services we’ve tested have been inconsistent in their communication about order status, and they’ve only provided updates on the day of delivery. In our testing, Tempo’s consistent communication stood out from the pack. Doreen said she was updated via email throughout the process, from when the meal was finalized until her shipment was out for delivery. She noted she also received a picture with her delivery email, which may especially come in handy if you live in an apartment building and the delivery driver accidentally sets your package by the wrong door.

Tempo’s website states it does not offer vegetarian or vegan options at this time. While we were able to find some meatless meals, such as the vegetarian tamale bowl, the service still doesn’t offer a dedicated plan for older adults who want plant proteins. And if you’re looking to increase your protein intake, you can’t double up on the protein because the prepared meals are designed to be single servings. Instead, you’d need to add an extra meal to increase protein intake, which would double the cost. Another thing to consider with this offering is that some instructions may be difficult to read. Tester Doreen said it looked like the label was damaged during printing, so the cooking instructions were “slightly fuzzy and wavy.” The instructions for prepared meals are usually simpler than those for a meal kit, of course, but you may decide that you want to avoid any labeling hassles.

How we tested the cheapest meal delivery services

We started the process of finding the cheapest meal delivery service for adults ages 50 and older by researching the market. Which affordable services are popular and why? Which companies have the best customer reviews — and are the reviews legitimate? After consulting nutrition experts, our survey results and focus group responses, we tested 15 meal delivery services and narrowed our list to those featured here.

To identify each service’s strengths and weaknesses, we recruited a group of testers ages 50 and older — including members of AARP’s The Ethel community — to test their meal kits and share their unbiased feedback. Testers then ordered and cooked their meals, either in their home or our AARP Smart Picks test kitchen, and shared their honest thoughts on key factors such as food quality, portion size, taste, customization options and ease of preparation.

How to choose the most affordable meal delivery services

Getting proper nutrition is vital for older adults, as it can aid in disease prevention, strengthen bones and bolster the immune system. But it can be tricky to eat right, especially if there are mobility limitations, texture-modification requirements or smaller appetites, says Andrea Olynyk, registered dietitian at Heart to Home Meals in Toronto, Canada. “All of these challenges contribute to decreases in food intake and malnutrition among older adults,” she says.

Get More From AARP

One benefit of meal delivery services is that they can help remove barriers to eating well. But companies that offer meal kits and prepared meals can be pricey. So, how do you find an affordable service that you can enjoy? When comparing meal delivery companies, you may want to consider the following factors to find the best fit.

Budget

Budget can be a key factor for meal delivery services. But, as we’ve noted, starting costs can vary, especially when you consider recipe add-ons or other upgrades. That’s why it may be beneficial to start by figuring out your budget. Consider your monthly income and current grocery expenses to determine your ideal weekly price for a meal subscription. Many companies on this list offer different plans that allow for some flexibility in pricing. For example, buying more prepared meals from Tempo each week drops the starting serving price.

If you’re not sure where to start planning your budget, you can check out AARP’s Home Budget Calculator tool, which can walk you through how to balance your income and expenses.

Prep time

According to our research, one of the main appeals of meal delivery services is how much time they can save subscribers. The majority of survey respondents (54 percent) said convenience and time savings were the primary reasons they subscribed to a meal delivery service. This convenience can be especially helpful for people who have health or mobility challenges. “Older adults who have difficulty standing for extended periods, lifting heavy cookware or navigating grocery stores may find that meal delivery services support independence while reducing physical strain,” says Barnes, the registered dietitian in Pennsylvania.

But while all meal delivery services can help cut down on time at the grocery store, the time savings they offer in the kitchen can vary. For instance, meal kits from services like HelloFresh or Home Chef require you to prepare the meal from start to finish, which can include chopping and measuring ingredients or standing over a stove. Prepared meals from services like Factor or Tempo, on the other hand, only require reheating. And while meal kits typically list an estimated prep time for each meal, our testing showed that these estimates may not be accurate.

Dietary restrictions

As an older adult looking for a meal delivery service, it can be important to consider those that — as Olynyk, the registered dietitian in Toronto, notes — provide menu options that accommodate different dietary needs, such as low-sodium, heart-healthy, diabetes-friendly and vegetarian choices.

Many of our picks for the cheapest meal delivery services have filters that let you specify your preferences at sign-up and sort recipes accordingly, including low-sodium, pork-free or dairy-free. Some services also provide clear descriptions of the type of diet their recipes fit into. For example, Home Chef has badges on recipes like “fiber-rich,” “gluten-smart” and “calorie-conscious.” Factor includes protein+, vegan and veggie.

If you’re not sure what your nutritional needs are or have questions about the best meal plan for you, consider speaking with your health care provider.

Delivery experience

When choosing a wallet-friendly meal delivery service, you also may want to consider the delivery experience.

While some services deliver your food on a pre-appointed date and time each week, which may not be ideal, all of the meal services on this list allow you to choose your delivery date. This scheduling option is a benefit if you’ll be ordering fresh ingredients, because it lets you set delivery times for when you’ll be home, so your food won’t be sitting for hours — and possibly spoiling — outside your door. That said, if you decide to order from a meal delivery service that is not on this list — and that doesn’t allow you to choose your own delivery date — do consider if that shipping option would work for your lifestyle.

In the case of a delay with your shipment, the service will likely notify you of any changes. A few of our testers experienced a delivery delay during testing, meaning their food did not arrive at the initial time they expected.

Do meal delivery services really save you money?

If you already shop strategically at the store and watch sales, signing up for a meal service may not improve your food budget's bottom line. But if you go to the grocery store multiple times per week, frequently make excess amounts of food or often throw out leftovers, then meal delivery services may reduce overall food spending, notes Barnes.

You May Also Like

In addition, there can be indirect savings with these subscriptions, including reduced transportation costs, less food waste, fewer impulse purchases and potentially improved health outcomes if subscribers can gain more consistent levels of good nutrition, says Barnes.

How much do the cheapest meal delivery services cost?

The least expensive meal delivery services on this list cost between $6.99 and $11.49 per dinner serving, with EveryPlate and Home Chef as the most affordable and Factor as the most expensive, per our testing. Our pick for best-value meal delivery, Home Chef, offers a standard plan at $9.99 per serving and a family plan starting at $6.99. In general, the final price you’d pay if you decide to order from any of these services depends on any upgrades you make, and the number and type of meals you select, as some dishes may cost more due to expensive ingredients. These services also carry a shipping cost for each box.

You can see a breakdown of each service’s starting prices per dinner serving in the chart below. These prices do not account for any upgrades or modifications.

How to save money on meal delivery services

Many of the least expensive meal delivery services offer sales and discounts, especially for new customers. If you choose one of these services, it can be a good idea to check the company’s website for any promotions or first-time subscriber discounts before you officially sign up.

At the time of writing this review, these were the first-time discounts our testers found:

  • EveryPlate: $2.99 per meal for your first box
  • Home Chef: 75 percent off your first box
  • HelloFresh: 10 free meals for your first box
  • Factor: 50 percent off your first box and free shipping
  • Tempo: 30 percent off your first four boxes

Keep in mind, however, that commercial meal delivery services aren’t your only option. “Many older adults are surprised to learn that they may qualify for nutrition assistance programs that significantly reduce food costs while providing access to healthy foods,” says Barnes. She encourages older adults and caregivers to explore federally funded and community-based nutrition programs before paying out of pocket. One example is Meals on Wheels, a meal program funded by the Older Americans Act, which supports home- and community-based social services for older adults.

For information on programs that may be active in your area, see the AARP Foundation’s article on where to find food assistance.

FAQs

Can I pause my meal delivery service subscription?

Yes, most companies — and all the ones on this list — allow you to pause your subscription or skip a week of deliveries, which can be helpful if you’re traveling or simply want a break. However, if you want to take this action for your next shipment, make sure you log in to your account before the cutoff date. Most companies have a stated window before the next delivery during which you can change your order or skip a week. It will vary by company, but this window is generally around five days before your next delivery.

How do I cancel a meal delivery service?

Meal delivery subscriptions involve selecting how many meals you’d like each week, and paying a weekly recurring charge for that same number of meals. You can cancel your meal delivery service subscription by logging into your account and navigating to your account settings. During this process, there are generally a few questions you’ll have to click through before you’re able to cancel your subscription. The questions are often designed to make you reconsider canceling, and some companies will even offer discounts to keep your account active. Alternatively, you can call the company’s customer service and cancel over the phone. All the companies on this list allow you to cancel a subscription at any time.

Which meal delivery services have the best deals?

Based on our testing, EveryPlate and Home Chef have special offers for first-time customers. EveryPlate runs a deal for $2.99 per meal for your first box, and Home Chef offers 75 percent off your first box at the time of writing this review. Most meal delivery services offer some form of promotion or sale, especially when you first sign up, pause or cancel your membership.
