While enjoying a morning cup of coffee in bed may be a relaxing way to start the day, it only takes one wrong move for that coffee to splatter across your mattress. If you’re looking for a simple way to shield your bed from such mishaps, you might consider a waterproof mattress protector. These covers provide an extra line of defense against accidental spills or the loss of bladder control among older adults with urinary incontinence.
A waterproof protector also helps to reduce the general wear and tear on a mattress, extend its life and retain its warranty. Visible stains or damage typically void this coverage.

To help older adults protect the investment in their beds, our AARP Smart Picks team rounded up the top waterproof mattress protectors based on lab test results and feedback from independent testers ages 60 and 66. With these insights and guidance from medical professionals we consulted, we thoroughly examined the features most important to older adults, such as ease of application, temperature regulation and material quality.
Waterproof mattress protectors are typically assembled with a soft comfort fabric on top, often cotton or polyester, and a waterproof layer in the middle or on the bottom, usually made of polyurethane or polyethylene (synthetic plastic products). The protectors we chose to highlight are a mix of these fabrications. All are machine washable and scored highly in our water spill testing.
For consistency, we evaluated queen-size protectors on a 12-inch-tall mattress. Read on to learn about our top choices and what to consider when shopping for a waterproof mattress protector.

Best Waterproof Mattress Protector Overall: Saatva Signature Mattress Pad
- Pros and cons
- Features
Pros
Excelled in our water spill test
Third-party certified materials
Elastic band helps keep it in place
Cons
Not cool to the touch
Expensive
Materials: Percale cotton top and bottom layers; polyurethane moisture barrier; polyester and spandex side panels
Water spill test score: 5 out of 5
Wash care: Machine wash cold, no bleach, gentle cycle, tumble dry
Key takeaways from our testing
The Saatva Signature Mattress Pad stayed completely dry in our water spill test, resulting in a stellar score. This test involves pouring approximately half a cup of water onto the protector and recording how much is absorbed. After two minutes, testers determine if any liquid has soaked through to the mattress. “The water just puddles on the surface before fully absorbing in,” said Donna, a 60-year-old tester. “Underneath, the mattress was still dry,” said Gerianne, a 66-year-old tester. “I can't feel the water through the protector. It's not even cold where the water is being held.” This protector has a thin polyurethane barrier between the two cotton layers that helps to prevent the water from seeping through.
The Saatva Signature Mattress Pad earned superb marks from our testers for material quality. Gerianne said it felt like “a regular sheet” and “just like your grandma’s quilt.” Its 100-percent percale cotton is OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, making it one of the two models on our list with this certification, which verifies that the product has been independently tested for over 1,000 harmful substances. Both testers said the protector fit the mattress perfectly, and its grippy silicone elastic band helped keep it in place. “I think someone with limited dexterity would be able to put this on. I didn’t need to use excessive force, nor push or pull the protector into place,” Gerianne said.
At $165 for a queen, this model is more expensive than the average cost of all the protectors on our list ($152). Another downside: Although it earned respectable marks in our cooling gun test by retaining about 8 degrees of heat, Gerianne said it wasn’t “cool to the touch” and felt “slightly warmer than other models, maybe because of the quilted top.” Our cooling gun test involves measuring the initial surface temperature and comparing it with the temperature after a tester lies on it for one minute. The less heat it retains, the better the score.
Best Value Waterproof Mattress Protector: The Mattress Protector by Silk and Snow
- Pros and cons
- Features
Pros
Wallet-friendly with a long trial period
Helps limit heat buildup
Excellent waterproofing
Cons
Looser fit
No labels for top and bottom
Materials: Polyester and polyethylene
Water spill test score: 5 out of 5
Wash care: Machine wash cold, no bleach, normal cycle, tumble dry on low heat
Key takeaways from our testing
A queen-size version of The Mattress Protector by Silk and Snow costs $80, making it the most affordable option on our list. The company offers a 100-night trial period — the longest on this list. It also offers a one-year warranty and free shipping and returns, provided the protector is returned in “donatable condition” (no stains, tears or odors). And, like the Saatva Signature Mattress Pad, it carries OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certification.
This mattress protector aced our cooling gun test, delivering the second-best performance on our list by retaining only 7.2 degrees. It features a top layer designed to keep it cool to the touch. “I found it very sleek and cooling,” Gerianne said. It also gained a perfect score in our water spill test by keeping the mattress completely dry. “Even the bottom of the protector felt very dry, but very cold from the water,” said Gerianne.
Keeping cool is key to getting quality rest. “The body needs to cool down slightly to enter deeper stages of sleep, so if you’re hot, you might wake up feeling less rested,” says Dr. Casey Slattery, orthopedic spine surgeon at the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, California.
Testers found this protector to be slightly oversized and loose for a 12-inch-tall bed, noting that it had excess material hanging over. “It isn’t completely flush to the mattress. It might be better on a taller bed,” Donna said. Gerianne said she wished it had labels indicating the top, bottom and sides, but observed that it was otherwise easy to put on.
Most Breathable Waterproof Mattress Protector: Helix Waterproof Mattress Protector
- Pros and cons
- Features
Pros
Impressive breathability
Keeps the mattress dry
Easy to put on
Cons
Middling material quality
Designed to fit taller mattresses
Materials: Polyester knit fabric top and skirting, polyurethane backing
Water spill test score: 4 out of 5
Wash care: Machine wash cold, no bleach, tumble dry on low or medium heat
Key takeaways from our testing
While tester Donna said the Helix Waterproof Mattress Protector wasn’t “cool to the touch,” its towel-like texture made it feel more breathable than different models she tested. “Other protectors could feel a little plasticky, but this feels like a towel, which is more breathable,” she said. When lying on it she said she didn’t feel herself warming up or cooling down.
The protector also earned a respectable score in our water spill test. The liquid puddled on the surface before being absorbed by the protector’s top layer, without soaking through to the mattress. “The bottom of the protector feels cold, but I don’t feel any wetness,” Donna said.
The Helix Waterproof Mattress Protector earned near-perfect marks from our testers for how easy it was to apply it to the mattress. “The elastic isn’t too tight, so you don’t need to have a lot of strength in your hands [to put it on],” Donna said. Securing a protector to the bed may be difficult for older adults with limited mobility or grip strength, or general difficulty with bending or pulling. In our testing, protectors that require minimal effort and stay on without corners popping off or needing repeated adjustments receive a higher score.
This protector earned a so-so rating for its material quality. “It’s very basic, like a thin, cheap towel,” Donna explained. Another downside: When securing the protector to the mattress, Gerianne noted extra material along the sides that may need to be tucked in on thinner beds, as this protector is designed to fit mattresses up to 15 inches tall. “I wouldn’t like it if I put on a sheet and [the protector] bunched up underneath,” Gerianne said.
Best Fitting Waterproof Mattress Protector: Nectar Serenity Waterproof Mattress Protector
- Pros and cons
- Features
Pros
First-rate fit
Soft feel
Perfect performance in our water spill test
Cons
Retains heat
Not breathable
Materials: Polyester
Water spill test score: 5 out of 5
Wash care: Machine wash, tumble dry on low heat
Key takeaways from our testing
Tester Gerianne said the Nectar Serenity Waterproof Mattress Protector “fits like a glove.” She said it required minimal effort to put it on, awarding it a superb score in our fit test. “I didn’t have to pull too hard, and nothing popped out of place. It’s very stretchy, which helps,” Gerianne said. Both testers said the protector’s polyester material was soft and pleasing to touch, like a cotton T-shirt. “It doesn’t feel synthetic or rubbery,” Gerianne added.
This protector earned a top-notch score in our water spill test. Testers said the liquid pooled on top before being absorbed by the protector. “The mattress was completely dry underneath and not affected by the water,” Gerianne said.
Nectar’s mattress protector retained nearly 9 degrees of heat in our cooling gun test, one of the worst results on this list. Testers said it wasn’t very cool to the touch. “It’s soft and all, but not particularly cooling,” said Gerianne. She also noted that it “doesn’t feel super breathable.” If you’re a hot sleeper, you might consider the The Mattress Protector by Silk and Snow, which earned a perfect temperature regulation score.
Best Cooling Waterproof Mattress Protector: Bear GlacioTex Protector
- Pros and cons
- Features
Pros
Outstanding temperature regulation
Stellar score for ease of putting on
Top-level waterproofing
Cons
Most expensive on our list
No third-party certifications
Materials: 50-50 blend of polyester and polyethylene
Water spill test score: 5 out of 5
Wash care: Machine wash cold, no bleach, gentle cycle, tumble dry on low heat
Key takeaways from our testing
The Bear GlacioTex Protector retained only 4.5 degrees in our cooling gun test — the best performance on our list — resulting in a perfect score for temperature regulation. In addition to its feeling sleek and smooth, tester Donna said she “immediately noticed its cooling effect” when lying down on it. Bear says its hypoallergenic GlacioTex fabric is made from fibers that pull heat away from your body. “It stayed cool the entire time I was on it,” Donna added. That could translate to relief for older adults who sleep hot or experience hot flashes.
Donna said she didn’t have to exert much effort to stretch this protector over the corners of the mattress. “It goes on seamlessly,” she noted. It earned standout marks for both its ease of application and waterproofing. In the water spill test, testers said the liquid initially beaded up on top before soaking into the protector. “It does a really good job of keeping moisture away from the sleeper. And It didn’t soak through to the bed at all,” Donna explained.
The Bear GlacioTex Protector performed well in most categories except affordability. Retailing for $250, it’s the most expensive on our list. However, Bear frequently offers discounts throughout the year that can bring the price down to around $175. We also wish this protector’s polyester and polyethylene blend had third-party certifications to verify the material quality. While not all the models on this list have third-party certifications, we appreciate them since they provide peace of mind and eliminate guesswork.
Best Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector: Birch Waterproof Mattress Protector
- Pros and cons
- Features
Pros
Stellar material quality
Cozy and soft
Easy to apply
Cons
Expensive
Retains body heat
Materials: 100-percent organic fair-trade jersey cotton with a waterproof polyurethane layer
Water spill test score: 5 out of 5
Wash care: Machine wash cold, no bleach, gentle cycle, tumble dry on low heat
Key takeaways from our testing
The Birch Waterproof Mattress Protector earned a perfect score for material quality — one of two on this list (the other being Saatva). It’s made with 100-percent organic cotton that’s Fair Trade certified, signifying that the cotton meets rigorous social, economic and environmental standards. The Birch is the only model on our list with this certification. For older adults whose skin is sensitive to synthetic materials, bedding with organic textiles may be a better option. And even though it’s made from cotton, testers said it still delivered superior waterproofing. Gerianne noted that the water pooled on the surface and rolled around without being absorbed. The mattress underneath remained completely dry, she said.
Tester Gerianne said the protector’s material felt “tightly woven” and “very durable,” and she appreciated its natural look and color. Tester Donna said, “The texture is very smooth and feels great.” She awarded it a near-perfect mark for how easy it was to put on the mattress, saying its stretchiness helped. “I was able to get it around the corners without putting in a lot of effort,” she explained.
Retailing at about $199, the Birch Waterproof Mattress Protector is the second-priciest option on our list. It also retained the most heat in our cooling gun test, holding onto 9.1 degrees. Testers said the jersey knit cotton gave the protector more of a “soft and fuzzy” texture rather than being cool to the touch. “It feels pretty cozy, so I did feel it heating up beneath me,” Donna said. If you’d appreciate more active cooling or you’re not inclined to spend so much money, you might want to consider another option.
How we test mattress protectors
We started our process by researching the market. Which mattress protectors are popular and why? Which companies have the best customer reviews, and are the reviews legitimate? After completing our research and speaking with medical experts, we narrowed our list of products to test.
To identify each mattress protector’s strengths and weaknesses, we conducted controlled tests to assess such features as cooling ability, waterproofing, fit, ease of applying, feel and material quality. We then recruited older adult testers to provide unbiased feedback. They answered questions like: How easy is it to put the protector onto the mattress? Does your body heat up as you lie on top of the mattress protector? Did the protector keep moisture away from the mattress surface? Models that excelled in our tests made our list of the best mattress protectors.

How to choose the best waterproof mattress protectors
Based on our research and test results, here are some features to keep in mind when shopping for a waterproof mattress protector.
Waterproofing
For those who live with urinary incontinence or mobility conditions that may make spills more likely, waterproofing is a top consideration. A waterproof mattress protector provides a barrier against liquids, often featuring a thin layer of polyurethane topped with a softer fabric, such as cotton or polyester.
Some companies offer water-resistant protectors that only repel light moisture and may still allow larger spills to soak through. It’s important to make sure that the protector is waterproof, not just water-resistant. All models on our list are marketed as waterproof and earned “very good” scores or better in our water spill test, indicating superior protection against liquids.
A tip for managing urinary incontinence
If you have accidents while sleeping, keep spare bedding and mattress protectors nearby, says Dr. Jason B. Carter, a board-certified urologist at Unity Urology in Greeneville, Tennessee. “This makes it easier to change everything quickly, get back to bed and reduce prolonged skin exposure to moisture,” he says.
Material
The right material for you depends on personal preference and health considerations.
Older adults with limited dexterity or grip strength may want to consider fabrics that are easier to hold onto, such as cotton or flannel, says Dr. Gerda Maissel, a board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician in New York. However, these materials may not slide as well, which could make it harder to pull across the mattress. “Smoother fabrics, like sateen or blends, can be easier to tuck,” she adds.
Most of the protectors on our list are made of polyester and polyethylene, which typically result in a slicker feel. The Saatva and Birch are made with cotton as well as polyester or polyurethane.
Carter, the board-certified urologist in Tennessee, recommends choosing an absorbent mattress protector that doesn’t just keep the liquid on top, but also wicks moisture away from your body. “What I’m more concerned about is prolonged exposure of the skin to moisture. I would focus on keeping the skin as clean and dry as possible,” he emphasizes.
Certifications
Mattress protectors can hold certifications that indicate different material qualities or standards. The third-party certifications on this list include:
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: Saatva and Silk & Snow
- Fair Trade: Birch
The OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certification ensures that the product has been tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances and is “harmless to human health.” The Fair Trade certification means the product meets strict social, environmental and economic standards.
Knowing your material preferences can help narrow down the options when choosing the right waterproof mattress protector.
Ease of application
Maneuvering around the bed or lifting the bed corners to apply a mattress protector may be challenging for some.
Sheets or mattress protectors with deeper pockets can be easier to manage, since there’s usually more material to work with, says Maissel, the board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician in New York. But keep in mind that excess material could cause some bunching beneath your sheets if not properly tucked in.
Our older adult testers found that the Saatva, Bear and Nectar mattress protectors were easy to put on, garnering top-notch ratings in this category. However, all the protectors on our list scored “very good” or better for ease of application.

FAQs
How effective are waterproof mattress protectors?
Based on our testing, they can be very effective at preventing liquid from reaching and staining the mattress. They may also help prevent the buildup of other particles and allergens, such as from dust mites, pollen, dead skin cells or pet dander.
How often should you wash a mattress protector?
In general, every one to two months, according to many bedding companies. If a mattress protector becomes soiled with urine or other bodily fluids, it’s best to remove it immediately from the bed and properly clean it, following the manufacturer’s directions. Washing frequency depends on your situation and preferences though. If you share the bed with pets or have allergies, you may want to consider washing it more often.
Do waterproof mattress protectors work for urine?
Yes, a waterproof mattress protector can work well against urine if it has a good barrier layer to block the liquid. A protector with a soft cotton or polyester top, such as those on our list, can increase comfort and help absorb moisture, pulling it away from your body. All the models featured in this roundup effectively blocked liquid from absorbing into the underlying mattress.
