Key takeaways

  • The recall applies only to specific Zapp’s and Dirty Potato Chip flavors, sizes and Best By dates in July and August 2026.
  • Utz said the potentially contaminated seasoning batches tested negative, but the products have been pulled after a supplier warning as a precaution.
  • Older adults face higher risks from salmonella complications and should seek care promptly if symptoms appear.

Utz Quality Foods is recalling certain varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips after a supplier warned that a seasoning ingredient used in the products may be contaminated with salmonella, according to a company announcement published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Hanover, Pennsylvania–based snack maker said the recall was initiated after its supplier notified the company that a seasoning containing dry milk powder could be linked to salmonella. Although the seasoning batches tested negative before being used, Utz said it is recalling the affected products out of an abundance of caution. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled chips, and the recall does not include any other Utz products.

Health risks and symptoms of salmonella

Salmonella can cause serious illness, particularly in older adults, young children and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms often begin within several hours to a few days after exposure and may include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps.

In more severe cases, the infection can spread beyond the digestive system and lead to complications that require medical treatment. Anyone who develops symptoms after eating a recalled product should seek medical care promptly.

As people age, foodborne illnesses can lead to more severe dehydration and longer recovery times. Adults 50 and older should contact a health care provider right away if they experience high fever, persistent or bloody diarrhea, or signs of dehydration. Drinking fluids and monitoring symptoms closely can help reduce complications while waiting for care.
