Planters Nuts Sold at Publix, Dollar Tree Recalled Over Listeria Reports

Hormel Foods Sales recalled two varieties of Planters nuts that were manufactured in April because they may be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections in older adults, those with weakened immune systems and young children.

Although there have been no reports of illness related to this recall, the announcement was made out of an abundance of caution, said a statement from Hormel.

The recalled nuts were shipped to Publix distribution centers in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina, and to Dollar Tree warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia.

The recall Planters brand nuts are:

• 4-ounce Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts with a “Best if Used by” date of April 11, 2025, and a UPC code of 2900002097
• 8.75-ounce Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts with a “Best if Used by” date of April 5, 2026, and a UPC code of 2900001621

No other sizes, varieties or other packaging of Planters products are involved in the recall, the press release said.

Anyone who bought the recalled nuts may return them to the store where purchased for an exchange. Other questions may be addressed by contacting Hormel Foods Customer Relations online, by chat or by calling 800-523-4635.

Symptoms of a listeria infection

Listeriosis, the infection stemming from consuming food contaminated with listeria, poses a severe threat to people 65 and older. This group is four times as likely to be infected, according to the CDC.

Symptoms associated with a listeria infection include neck stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, fever, muscle aches and fatigue.

Pregnant women usually experience only fever, fatigue and muscle aches. However, listeriosis can lead to pregnancy loss or premature birth, and can cause serious illness or death in newborns. Anyone who experiences symptoms of severe listeria illness should call their health care provider.

About 1,600 people in the U.S. get listeriosis each year, with an average of 260 deaths, the CDC estimates.
