Canned Tuna Recalled for Botulism Risk

Products recalled from Costco, Kroger, Publix, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, among others

Canned tuna from four different brands was recalled over concerns that the pull-tab lid on cans may not seal properly, potentially leading to leaks or contamination that could cause botulism, a serious foodborne illness.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products. Still, the supplier, Tri-Union Seafoods, said in a statement it initiated the recall as a precaution to ensure consumer safety.

Recalled canned tuna brands

The affected products were sold in 25 states and Washington, D.C., under Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s brands. They were distributed to these stores in these locations:

  • H-E-B label – Texas
  • Trader Joe’s label – Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin
  • Genova 7 oz. – Costco in Florida and Georgia
  • Genova 5 oz. – Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and independent retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas
  • Van Camp’s label – Walmart and independent retailers in Pennsylvania, Florida and New Jersey The list at the bottom of this article includes the specific products, product codes, and expiration dates.

Advice to consumers

Anyone who purchased the recalled canned tuna should throw it away or return it to the retailer for a refund. Even if the tuna does not look or smell spoiled, it should not be eaten. Consumers may also contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit to help return the product and a coupon for a replacement product at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com  or 833-374-0171.

Symptoms of botulism

Botulism is a rare but serious illness that attacks the nerves, leading to muscle paralysis, breathing difficulties, and even death. The toxin responsible, Clostridium botulinum, can develop in food, wounds and the intestines. Symptoms of botulism include trouble swallowing, muscle weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, blurry vision, slurred speech, and difficulty breathing or moving the eyes. Foodborne botulism may also cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea, according to the CDC. Symptoms may appear within hours or take several days to develop, says the Cleveland Clinic, and without treatment, it can spread throughout the body.
